Retread laws vary by state. Some places they only apply to commercial vehicles.
If you are more flexible with your selections, you can find a better deal in a different size. The deuce isn't so picky.
You might look at recap or retread tires, they typically run about 1/3 the cost of new tires. Also look on ebay and the like for used, you can get 80% tread for pretty good prices and sometimes free shipping.
Unlike a car, this truck is very forgiving to whatever wheel/tire combo you put on it - this is my opinion.
You can pretty much put any tire on that will fit. If you still have the stock wheels (rims), I've even seen some people, here, put 395's on those. You can also change the wheel out...
These answers are totally off the top of my head, I claim no expertise.
Because it's what they had rolling around in the shop?
My guess (I never served) is that, in the military, they pull stuff apart and put it back together to make sure things are in good working order, to learn how to...
They removed the flame heater, said it would look cleaner and be an easier install. I don't believe it was working anyways and I'll probably be replacing it with an ether start kit - yes, I know, but if I'm in a situation where I need it, I'll need it.
Unless it's been converted, the truck runs off of 24v. You can certainly make a bigger 24v battery, and this could be useful for long starts in the winter maybe, if you have the space for it.
I'm in the process of building a LiFePo powerwall for my camper, it'll be 25.6v, 600 amp battery -...
My spare motor is still in the bottom part of the engine crate. I bought a used pallet jack just for it - figured I can always resell the jack and get what I paid for it. My long term plans always consisted of taking parts off it as I needed it. If I needed the space back, I would disassemble...
So, I was having some trouble with the injection pump. Truck was at a shop getting air lockers installed (another story in and of itself) and while it was there I asked if they'd be interested in doing some other work...such as installing a new hydraulic head. Unfortunately, when I got it...
After making a ton of calls, I came down to Michelin XZL or Goodyear 278 retreads. I can source these locally which is why I'm looking at them. Several companies make an open shoulder 445 tire retread, but I want at least 28/32 tread depth or better and both the Michelin and Goodyear are...
One way I find information out is looking for people that supply parts and mods for Rockwell axles. There are a few out there as Rockwells have been a fav of the rock crawling crowd. Not recommending you buy anything from them, but you'll find data about parts there, and where they concentrate...
I ordered a 24v and 12v upgrade alternators. The 24v showed up, but the 12v never did and after repeated calls in which I was assured it was on the way, I finally filed a claim with my credit card company. I eventually bought an off the shelf 12v alt meant to be used by long haul trucks.
Yep, that's why I like to give stuff away. Let someone else worry about picking it up. If you have the room, consider storing it for a little while and offering it up for free to someone in the "Pay it forward" section. I always look at how some people are looking to restore these things on a...
I'm not reinventing anything, my truck has a plate on the dash panel that says to idle it 5 min before going anywhere and 5 min after I stop.
Reading about wet stacking, perhaps I should pay attention to the exhaust, but I really only notice black smoke when I first start it up - that goes away...
