Ok... Its official! NO NEED TO PULL DRIVE SHAFTS... 4speed trans in Park, Transfer Case in Neutral, (just like any other GM) towed it 280 miles at 60 mph most of the time, I5 from WA to OR and then down the stupidest hwy in America (US 6 to Tillamook in Oregon), very UNDER maintained.
I pulled...
Well... this is the week I flat tow the M1151A1 about 300 miles.. Using the 14k tow bar and all parts recommended. I still can't decide if I need to pull those drive shafts or not but I think I want to hit the hwy for 5 miles and check the temp of the Tcase... then go 30 miles and check again...
I have rebuilt a 4L60 that had ratchetted the pawl and it was for about 10 secs... it looked pretty bad when I got it out. Had to replace the sun shell also.
The tCase is in N... it would only damage the parking pawl if the Tcase for whatever reason went into gear. Still a drivable rig. The 3speed will burn up and be inoperable all together.
So after talking with some people at our local base... The general idea, true or not, is as follows...
The manuals are to be written for ALL HMMWVs so the guys in the field did the same towing procedures across the board and this procedure included pulling the shafts on the old 3 speeds because...
I read in the military literature to disconnect the shafts if your going over 30mph... I have put many T-cases in N and towed chevys all over the place... Is there something different in the M1151A1 TCase? I'm with you... it just doesn't make sense but everyone is saying to disconnect. I want to...
I had to just keep runnning it and running it forever to get ALL the air out.. one time it took hours. It’s nice to put an electric pump near the tank.. then you can open the line just before the IP and bleed it out with the electric pump instead of fire the engine up 100 times. Also, if you...
Sooooo much money money money for what? Tons of noise and smoke? Not bashing the Cummins or even the newer 6.5s but gosh, so much headache and for what? Anyhow, I got an old chevy with a good 454 and had everything I needed for $1,200.00. Running for years in my Blazer and the expense (other...
Shouting out from Corbett, OR
I have built/rebuilt a crew cab deuce, a HMMWV gasser 454 and now an M1009.
I dont know everything but feel free to ask if it relates. Also, I have a life time of history in building chevy stuff. Anyhow, just thought I might reach out to others in the NW.
We are all going up to Mt HOOD on Sat the 7th of Jan 2017. We are going to be there at 930AM and head up Lolo Pass Rd to get some snow flying.
Please join us if you have anything with 4x4 and like to be in big groups.

all you need to do is check the temp of the water in the reservoir when its running hot. I will bet that its only 220ish at the highest. The gauges never read correct.
Started fresh. Pulled the 454 and had it board out to a 468. Rebuilt with new higher comp pistons and cam. New everything. Got it all installed and working on exhaust now. The truck is running but I want you to see the pic of the engine and how it fits in. You can't see anything with it all put...
And everyone asked why I didn't like the old diesel and swapped it for a chevy 454 gasser. Answer I did about the same thing as the list above and still had issues that were never going to end.
I know, 454 is not a gas saver for sure. I really think its worth the fuel cost. That would be the biggest draw back I suppose. But gosh, this thing is a beast. Mean and feisty. Also, all repairs a so much cheeper than any diesel stuff.
The 454 puts out a lot more power than I thought. If I did...
HOLY S&*T!!!
Just got back from the first good drive. AND WOW. Thats some real POWER. I can't believe the difference in torque. You could easy bust a differential or something. If I was 20 years old again I would need a second set of tires within the week.
I had to make a few mods to the...
