Air is used to shift the transfer case, has nothing to do with 5th gear. Usually jumping out of gear is due to the bearings on the sector shaft being shot, this cannot be fixed in frame. Suggest you pull the cover and look for obvious problems with the shift forks before pulling the transmission.

Try removing the wire at the alternator. If this solves your problem, the diodes in your alternator are shorted.

The dash nomenclature plate attached with screws is a red flag, should be riveted. Does the vin on the plate match the other vin locations?

Ok so by bad you mean rough riding unloaded. Yeah it does seem the hubs are bolted to the frame on both trucks when unloaded. Both ride ok with the S250 and all the GMV crap bolted back on.
