I'm curious to know what this does to your MPGs.
I really like to do something similar but my M1009 is my most fuel efficient vehicle and I'd like to keep it that way :)
:ditto:
I've overcome the suburban deuce ownership stigma (my neighbors aren't complaining about the two M1009s in the driveway), so the only thing holding me back now is not having a building big enough to fit it in. My two car garage isn't going to cut it if I need to work on an M35A2 or a...
Ditto on jacking up the frame and taking off the front drive shaft... that's what I had to do. Also the 27MT starter is quite heavy, so make sure not to stop it with your face when it finally submits to gravity.
I got new starter bolts from gmpartsdirect.com. The GM part number is in the -20P...
HAH! Yes, I'm mostly kidding.
I flat towed a M1009 behind my F150 through Wisconsin. I did a short test drive to ensure the F150 had sufficient breaking power, during which I had a buddy in the M1009 with a walkie talkie, just in case. I would not advise actually going down the road like...
This thread makes me wonder if I'm about to buy a massively undersized unit. I was looking at this:
Shop Kobalt 30-Gallon Cast Iron Oil Lubricated Air Compressor at Lowes.com
I was under the assumption that ALL CUCV rear main seals leaked. I also assumed it's a lot of work to change it out.
I've got two M1009s and two oil soaked chunks of cardboard under them. They leak but it's pretty minimal.
I don't know about the M1028, but for my M1009 the wiring diagram is not correct in the -20 manual. There's a wire it shows going to the wrong post on the GP relay. You search this forum for the corrected diagram... I know it's been posted several times.
Ditto.
Or hitch on with whatever you pulled the trailer home with and tow it up there. Chock the tires with some 2x4's and you'll be good to go.
Nice looking unit. Make sure to siphon off some of the JP-8 left in the tank and save it for special occasions.
I love the smell of burnt JP-8...
If it were me, I'd put in a 6.2L. I was searching on the local craigslist recently and there were several 6.2L engines for sale. It looked like they could all be had for $400 or less. I doubt you can get a cummins for that kind of money.
For the tachometer, search this forum for "Tiny Tach" (or google it). There's a company that makes an add-on tachometer that uses a sensor on an injector line to get a fairly accurate tachometer read out. I think they go for around $100 new. Seems pretty reasonable.
