When I was driving in N.E. Pa, I used the trolley valve when I had to stop on an incline so I wouldn't roll backward when I started moving again. Another way to brake on inclines (if the road is dry/not icy) is to use a lower gear for compression and to "stab" brake the truck. Pick your safe...

I had a similar issue. I replaced the starter. Word of advice... have a friend help. Those b*sta*rds are HEAVY! I put a strap around mine while unbolting and had friend hold up on it till loose, then we both lowered to the ground. Good luck.

It's attached to the tranny housing and when the shifter is moved into the reverse position, it activates.....
