Thoughts on removing coil springs on A1R

Safety glasses..... Jock strap. Two condoms. 911 keyed in...... When they pop you WILL lose that death wheel. Where it goes.... Nobody knows.

    Air Flow CFM?

All the other newer military stuff (largely from Oshkosh) use some variant of the VIP line from IMMI. The HEMTT actually uses almost the same wheel I'm adapting and those are extremely common. Our S&S wheel was inherited from the Steyr which didn't have power steering (in all cases anyway) and...

    Air Flow CFM?

Sure.... But there's not much to see without looking really close because it's a 2008 M1079 A1R that I keep looking almost like it could have driven out of the Motorpool yesterday if you weren't intimately familiar with the van window sizes and that these were not equipped with awnings. Most of...

    Air Flow CFM?

It's just a filter. Not that glorious or complicated. As I pointed out with the airflow - it's SIMPLY a matter of maintenance. Maintenance cost, maintenance interval, and maintenance ease. Those are all pretty easy things to visualize in your mind. Consider every option from each of those...

Thoughts on removing coil springs on A1R

King will tell you they have no idea and that they will have to be custom made. A friend of mine has KING shocks on his M1088 and he also knows the owner who apparently arranged a team to custom build a set for him. Took them an entire day to manually machine all the required spacers and...

Thoughts on removing coil springs on A1R

Probably be plenty of A1P2 chassis being scrapped and all the inventory being dumped due to the completely different A2 platform..... likely be plenty of em laying around for as long as you and I need em.

Thoughts on removing coil springs on A1R

    Do it. There's zero drawbacks.

Who are the experts on the Air compressor

No. Installed dry. Same with the head gasket.

CAT HEUI issues, failures and fixes

Yep have to get 870 psi or no love making between ECM and injectors. Check the fuel delivery system. The lift pump on the back of the HEUI pump, the fuel hoses, the seals on the various filters, etc. Engine should start and run with the sensor unplugged or faulted out but will have no power -...

Who are the experts on the Air compressor

You just buy the whole kit. The leak at that gasket means you will also be replacing the unloader pistons, springs, and o-rings. You could make your own gasket with gasket paper, a ball-peen hammer and some assorted random ball bearings and replace the unloader piston o-rings with some from an...

I might be a little crazy – 4,000 mile M1079 recovery Illinois to Alaska

Flow rate is hard to estimate as it gets into length of the hose, number and degree of bends in the hose, etc. Easier to just replace like for like and not have unintended consequences.

Who are the experts on the Air compressor

Well hookup a gauge and see if it unloads at 125. If not the governor is adjustable or should be..... They don't typically come out of adjustment though so it may be malfunctioning. They are like $20.

Who are the experts on the Air compressor

That looks right to me! Claims it fits the PURest.

Who are the experts on the Air compressor

Need the higher pressure secondary relief valve. That was a supercession on the Army side due to nuisance opening and weak springs over time. The 370 map exposes this problem in a hurry due to the open path between the intercooler pipe and the dryer when the unload pistons prop open the intake...

    Ether Bottle Question

Right. The HEUI filter is a contingency. And good in case some small particulate makes it through. My point is that if enough shit got into it (talking many, many thousands of particulates) that servicing it became a necessity then the engine is already screwed and thus access to it (ever...

    Ether Bottle Question

I'm convinced of the issue but not the need to flatten the cooler *in all cases* - there may be some extreme cases where replacement or machining could be warranted and I think CAT does publish a flatness spec...... I think primarily the issue was resolved with the new style metal embossed...

    M1078 no crank blows fuse

Hopefully it hits 62 mph (100 KPH is the magic target) like it's supposed to. That should be it's gear limit with the engine at redline. The A1 trucks usually have no issue hitting that due to their enhanced power and slightly higher redline.

    M1079a1p2 strange starting issue

I have seen the manual battery disconnect switches fail - had one fail on a fairly new HEMTT not long ago. Stumped the guys at the base - TM did not include voltage drop tests (basically never does) so the troubleshooting tree would have never got them there. Old school troubleshooting by...

CAT HEUI issues, failures and fixes

You don't want to over-cool any of the fluids - around 212 degrees Freedom - hovering +/-10 degrees around that is generally ideal since that efficiently vaporizes moisture from condensation and any fuel that's entered the oil. The cooler you go the longer I takes to drive moisture and fuel out...

Two Batteries Instead of Four - Issues?

All degrees of preparedness. Block heat, battery heat, Webasto, etc - all require time. If my phone just alerted me that the local volcano is rumbling I'm not really inclined to sit around waiting for my block heater. And yeah Ether is the answer and I have that too but for the A1+ trucks the...
