I already called it the ground, so we're on the same page. Any time I'm welding the ground clamp is as close to what I'm welding as possible, on an area that's been stripped back to bare metal for good contact. That's not an issue at all.
I'm more concerned about what to do with the batteries...
I need to do some welding on my M1008. On my other vehicles, I normally just disconnect the negative connection and make sure the ground is good before I weld. No problems doing it that way. But that's one battery on a 12v system. What do you do with the two batteries on a 24v system?
'do you...
Some parts turned up, so my brother and I spent the day doing some wrenching on the M1008. The throttle cable linkage was missing the clip, and the rubber was shot, no idea how it stayed on before but it's nice and secure now. Put in the new speedometer cable and tried to put the new shift...
The last two photos are both M151s, not MBs or GPWs. Interesting that it does show them stacked, but on a rack and not resting on eachother like was claimed.
It does seem like it was more of a WWII era idea, but I was told by someone that the MUTT was designed so they could be stacked in a similar manner, which is allegedly why the front fenders and the rear arches are the same height.
I've never seen any evidence to support this practice, but...
It finally stopped raining for a day, so I thought I'd do a few small jobs on the M1008. Put in a new vacuum pump gasket, changed the shifter linkage bushings, and my brother dug into the dash to maybe swap in the junkyard speedometer we picked up back in September and to see if we can fix the...
I'm surprised the land rover parts are getting scarce with how many of them are around, even the MOD are still using them, so new bits have to be coming from somewhere? The CUCV has me spoiled, squarebody Chevy parts are pretty easy to find still, and fairly cheap even if you have to ship them...
Is this the one that was up on EBay for ages? I kept seeing it myself and thinking it was a neat bit of kit, just a bit rare and unusual so seemed like it'd be a nightmare to find parts for.
For your sake, I hope i'm wrong. Would certainly be something different to see at some future vehicle...
Not mine unfortunately, the Vic belongs to a friend. I kind of wish he'd kept the MUTT he had before, otherwise we'd have a pretty sweet motorpool for our reenactment group, but he had good reason to sell it.
Considering how bad the transmission was inside, the only thing 'wrong' with it was...
My 1008 is finally back on the road after going in for a transmission rebuild at the start of the year.
I knew it left drips of transmission fluid on my driveway, but didn't think it was that bad... untill my brother took it to Wales late last year and ran the torque converter dry. Took it to a...
Last weekend, some friends and I were invited to the former home of the USAF's 20th Tactical Fighter Wing, here in England, RAF Upper Heyford.
Though it's now been repurposed as a business park, the flightline is still largely intact, and the Upper Heyford Heritage Center put on regular bus...
From what I've seen, Air Force markings on the CUCVs seem to just be the 'US AIR FORCE' on the tailgate and the AF serial number on the bumpers, sometimes painted on the outsides of the doors, too. I've seen trucks with 'AFE __' (presumably, Air Force Europe) with the initials of the base they...
If there are no units local to you, maybe just mark it up as something you find interesting. Personally, I'm on the fence about marking my 1008 up as an Air Force vehicle from one of the bases here in England, or one belonging to the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment based in Germany.
I was only linking to that page to share the information on the unit marking system, I'm sure the same information is available elsewhere, but I've copied the relevant sections from that page for you:
As Guyfang said, there was only a token deployment of Marines in Europe during the 1980s...
I've done a lot of digging through archives for reference photos of the bumper markings for my own truck, but there's unfortunately not a whole lot of information or good reference imagery out there, I can share what I have learned, though. Buckle in for a long post, as I've learned things...
I finished off my Air Force plates and the light bar the other weekend, so it was finally time to paint over the Army markings on the tailgate and bumpers to get the M1008 looking like an Air Force truck again. The markings weren't original and were added on by the previous owner, so no history...
Just looking for some info on the usage of the red/yellow squares on the rear of vehicles. I know what they're for, but I'm looking for some info on when they first started being used, where they were used, and which branches/units used them?
From what I can gather myself, they are/were a...
Yeah, it's expensive however you look at it. If I'd have ordered those from that website with the machine screw, it would've cost me somewhere around $160 to get the amount I needed. The ones I bought locally are from the same manufacturer, they function exactly the same where it matters, just...
And it's done. The frame went together really nicely, i'm just having some fitment issues due to the fact it's an M880 cover on a CUCV frame. Might try and add some more holes for the bows to pin into that make the top fit a little better, but it's usable like this.
My paint arrived a week or two ago, finally found the time to turn all my parts green again this this afternoon. The spray guns my dad used to paint his GPW back in the 90s were still hanging in the workshop, it only felt right to put them back to work to make some more things green.
I'll...
