Blown Head Gasket Recovery (no longer) - Massive Engine Failure (!)

I’ve been slacking on posting an update but got the truck running again a little while ago. That motor I picked up seems to run pretty well and transmission hasn’t had issues either.

    Dark Seas M1008 Project

During replacement of timing chains on these motors I've also seen the worn chain causing the cam (and thus the IP) to be off by a few degrees from the crankshaft compared to the new chain. Which would make it so you have the IP turned more than expected. The main thing is it runs well so...

Blown Head Gasket Recovery (no longer) - Massive Engine Failure (!)

I'm trying to minimize the amount of work to do so I'm going to hope for the best and re-install as is. I've had the trans disconnected a few times so at this point it wouldn't take me long to pull if it does end up having issues.

Blown Head Gasket Recovery (no longer) - Massive Engine Failure (!)

Quite the timing, Saturday I actually picked up a used supposed running 6.5. I just want to get the truck driving again for now.

Blown Head Gasket Recovery (no longer) - Massive Engine Failure (!)

The pictures are definitely deceiving! Here is the same piston after a few passes with a scotch brite pad.

Blown Head Gasket Recovery (no longer) - Massive Engine Failure (!)

Good to know. I’ll have to figure out how to check the trans sooner than putting a different motor in. Maybe it did let go. Also got the pistons out. There is some scuffing but I believe it’s from eating pieces of metal when the motor started to blow apart. There are small fragments of metal...

Blown Head Gasket Recovery (no longer) - Massive Engine Failure (!)

Hmm. Interesting thought. I've never noticed vibration issues but that doesn't mean much necessarily. I used the same flex plate that came with the 700r4 for the 6.2 which supposedly is fine. But at this point who knows. Maybe it wasn't balanced correctly. I appreciate the insight.

Blown Head Gasket Recovery (no longer) - Massive Engine Failure (!)

I was idling at the camp for a few minutes before hitting the road, another 1-2 mins on the road before the hill, so it should've been warmed up enough. I did talk to both Leroy Diesel and Quadstar Tuning (turbo supplier). Leroy stated GEP doesn't offer a warrantee so he doesn't either, and I...

Blown Head Gasket Recovery (no longer) - Massive Engine Failure (!)

Yeah me too. I haven't decided yet, it may just end up being a older used 6.2 just to get it running. Question- am I correct in my evaluation that the head gasket did not fail? Granted I know nothing can be completely confirmed just by looking at pictures, but that there does not appear to be...

Blown Head Gasket Recovery (no longer) - Massive Engine Failure (!)

Got it through Leroy Diesel who orders it new through the GEP plant in Franklin Ohio. Picked it up there myself. I’ll give them a call tomorrow, there isn’t a warrantee on the motor unless I paid an extra $1k or something like that for 1 year. Seemed unnecessary at the time but I guess not now...

Blown Head Gasket Recovery (no longer) - Massive Engine Failure (!)

Any specific way I could check? I have the torque converter off and the input shaft looks and feels to be fine, not sure how much it’ll help pulling the pan but I could do that too. Just not sure what else to check being without a motor and not wanting to completely disassemble that too. The...

Blown Head Gasket Recovery (no longer) - Massive Engine Failure (!)

Yeah definitely no noticeable change in power, only that slight noise. When the motor/injectors were new I believe I briefly had a stuck injector (or potentially a last bubble of air working itself out) and that was much more noticeable sounding.

Blown Head Gasket Recovery (no longer) - Massive Engine Failure (!)

I was wondering about that valve mark as well. There aren't any lock washers I'm aware of on the motor or turbo, especially ones that would have the potential from getting inside. On piston #7 there is a section on the lower left that seems to me “missing” the soot with some red color which...

Blown Head Gasket Recovery (no longer) - Massive Engine Failure (!)

The mangled one was missing and the others I took off so I could rotate the crankshaft to remove the last torque converter bolt.

One is intact while the other is mangled. Here’s the top of the rod too.
