After some research, in 1962 Willys changed the axle ratios and the 1st and 2nd gear ratios. Also, my speedometer is off by quite a bit. I can hit 45 without pushing it too hard.
I swapped it over to Pertronix pointless ignition, runs a lot better. The vacuuming system does need to be redone though. I believe the hard starting is a result of bad initial compression.
I called a very reputable jeep expert about it. He said it could be junk import synchronizer blocking rings. Just going to flush it again and drive it till it gives me issues.
Refilled with GL1 90w. I’m going to change it again to make sure its all flushed out. It does shift fine. Only issues with it sometimes not wanting to go into first or reverse but just have to let off the clutch and press down again. It also occasionally leaves a puddle underneath it.

i was checking the transmission fluid level on my m38a1 and discovered the oil has metal particles inside. They look to be brass/bronze. I’ve never changed the oil in it, only had it for a few months. Previous owner had transmission rebuilt. Did someone use the wrong gear oil, nor yellow metal...
I recently decided to switch my M38A1’s distributor to pointless ignition with a pertronix kit. I got the kit in and it ran better than ever. I took it for a quick drive and made it 200 yards before it cut out. It wouldn’t restart at all. After a lot of troubleshooting I found the distributor...
I'll probably go the group 31 route then. A group 31 AGM is the same price as a 6TL. I'll make the switch as soon as another one of these batteries start giving me trouble.
Hello, we have a M939 with the original battery setup. Recently, we found one of the batteries was not getting fully charged. Cell levels were fine in it. I put it on a charger, it wouldn’t charge to 100%. We drove it around and I checked the voltage and the battery was low. Just that one...
Carb was professionally rebuilt. I did not replace the main carb gasket when I opened it up to check the float. It was in good condition.
I checked the timing a bit ago and it was within spec. It did sound a bit better if I advanced the timing a little bit. I did a compression taste a month or...

Vacuum gauge hooked up to the intake manifold.
it won’t start without a little bit of throttle. Barely idles with no throttle.
My M38A1 has always been a little hard to start but recently got a lot worse. Over the weekend, the float got stuck open somehow and flooded the carb. I took it apart and checked the adjustment, everything else was fine. It's running and driving fine now besides a bit of rough idle at times. I...
Thanks. I'm actually right by where Army Jeeps Parts is located so I was planning just to buy the paint he sells. It used to be part of a fire department. Previous owner removed the red paint with oven cleaner. It's really neat to see all the different markings.
Hello,
I have an M38A1 with original paint. I want to do touch-ups in some rough areas, but it seems it's 2 different colors. It looks to be both the Vietnam and earlier OD color. It's sort of in it's own camo pattern. Any recommendations?
