MEP-803A Fuel Gauge Pinned at about 95 Hours on the Clock

I'm noticing that the original gauge reads about 11Ω across its terminals. The VDO replacement, which is specified for this sender's resistance range, reads in the hundreds of ohms. I tried putting a 15Ω resistor across it, but the gauge still goes off the scale to the right when hooked up...

MEP-803A Fuel Gauge Pinned at about 95 Hours on the Clock

I finally bought this gauge (found it on Vehicle Controls website) and installed it, but the gauge goes all the way to the right when I turn on the ignition. I had to install a 1K resistor in series with the sender and a 160Ω resistor across the gauge to get it to read close to accurate (the...

MEP-803A Fuel Gauge Pinned at about 95 Hours on the Clock

Where can I get a replacement rubber gasket for the fuel cap? When the aux fuel pump didn't shut off, fuel reached the cap and spilled. Now when I take off the cap, the rubber gasket has expanded and is disintegrating. I can't get the fuel cap to fit properly now. Need to replace that rubber...

MEP-803A Fuel Gauge Pinned at about 95 Hours on the Clock

Finally got the float switch out of the tank. What I found was quite shocking: some type of GLUE had dripped on the upper float prior to assembly, freezing the float in the lower position permanently. I was able to break it free with considerable force. Then I scraped off the glue, oiled the...

MEP-803A Fuel Gauge Pinned at about 95 Hours on the Clock

I've siphoned some fuel off, and am trying (without success) to remove the float switch. I watched Colt's video on how to remove it, but it's not going. It' supposed to slide up 5" and then rotate clockwise, tilt to the right and rotate as being pulled out, but it's stopping at 1/4" of lift...

MEP-803A Fuel Gauge Pinned at about 95 Hours on the Clock

Not yet. I have to burn off the excess fuel so it doesn't spill. Right now, just opening the fuel filler results in diesel flowing out of the filler. Have to drain about a gallon first. But I plan to play with the adjustment a bit (try turning it and raise or lower it) in case it's hung up on...

MEP-803A Fuel Gauge Pinned at about 95 Hours on the Clock

After much searching, I found a replacement part for the AUX fuel float. This has never worked right from day one. I remember ALWAYS hearing the AUX fuel pump run when I rotate the main switch through AUX. So this part never worked from the beginning. A new one is quite expensive.

MEP-803A Fuel Gauge Pinned at about 95 Hours on the Clock

This looks like it may work. A youtube video showed this meter being used to replace original gauge:

MEP-803A Fuel Gauge Pinned at about 95 Hours on the Clock

While shopping for a replacement gauge (the original is out of stock, no longer made), I found this. The sender ohmmage range is close to requirements: They don't show the connections on the back of the gauge though. Suggestions for a suitable replacement?

MEP-803A Fuel Gauge Pinned at about 95 Hours on the Clock

As it turns out, the AUX fuel pump didn't shut off and I have a spill. Fuel came out of the filler. I measured across the molex connector. I have a dead short between the two red wires. All other wires read open/infinite ohms. As for the fuel gauge, that's a very strange one. If I remove...

MEP-803A Fuel Gauge Pinned at about 95 Hours on the Clock

I removed the fuel gauge and tested it with a bench power supply. I found it has unusual characteristics: memory. It will display full scale with 0.3V applied to the terminals. To get it to read zero, I have to reverse the meter leads and drive the needle in the other direction. If I drive it to...

MEP-803A Fuel Gauge Pinned at about 95 Hours on the Clock

Presently, the needle remains pinned to the right (past "full"). I have to find a way to unstuck the needle. I disconnected the meter and made some measurements. No internal shorts to ground found. Then, with the meter connected, I got 49Ω and 53Ω to ground. The tank is nearly full of diesel...

MEP-803A Fuel Gauge Pinned at about 95 Hours on the Clock

I think this (red arrow) is the fuel gauge sender. When I disconnect the wire, the 4.7 volts across the gauge is gone.. I measured 50Ω to ground from the center wire on the sender. The other wire is ground (less than 0.4Ω). The terminal on the sender is reading 52Ω across its terminals. The...

MEP-803A Fuel Gauge Pinned at about 95 Hours on the Clock

What I've done today is disconnect the three wires from the fuel gauge and measure resistance to ground. One of the pair reads 152Ω to ground. The other reads 49Ω to ground. The lead by itself on the right reads 52Ω to ground. When the main switch is in the "Run" position, I read about 5V...

MEP-803A Fuel Gauge Pinned at about 95 Hours on the Clock

Thanks for confirming the separate float/fuel level control for the aux pump. I noticed that when I switch the main start switch to AUX, even if the day tank is full, I hear the pump running. Is that normal or a malfunction of the float? Earlier this year, I tried unscrewing some of the...

MEP-803A Fuel Gauge Pinned at about 95 Hours on the Clock

I've set up my external AUX fuel tank this week, but I am concerned about the automatic working of the AUX fuel pump in light of the fact that my fuel gauge stopped working. My understanding is that the genset is to be run with the switch in the AUX position, so it can draw fuel from the...

Aux Fuel Tank for MEP-803A, Bung Adapter for 3/4" Port?

I'm in CT and there's nothing like fuel cubes on Marketplace. I've checked. Lots of plastic "food grade" 55 gallon drums and steel 55 gallon drums though. That Moeller 635022-10 36" Flexible Fuel Pick Up looks interesting. If that's fits 3/4" NPT that's fine. What's the other end fitting type...

Aux Fuel Tank for MEP-803A, Bung Adapter for 3/4" Port?

I see lots of plastic barrels for sale on Marketplace, and they have the required two 2" openings, but I'm concerned about the longevity of a plastic barrel. Wouldn't these develop cracks with summer/winter temperature swings? Yes, figuring out the 3/4" fittings adds complexity. Since I'm not a...

Aux Fuel Tank for MEP-803A, Bung Adapter for 3/4" Port?

So if I understand correctly, this has a male 3/4" NPT thread and passes a 3/8" soft drawn copper tubing? I also found something like this: Not sure if the top insert is for 3/8". The site sells 1/2" x 1/2" compression fittings and this was a photo of one example they had.

Aux Fuel Tank for MEP-803A, Bung Adapter for 3/4" Port?

I was pondering using some type of 3/4" NPT fitting, and then sweat soldering a 3/8" copper tube long enough to reach close to the bottom of the tank. I have access to Home Depot, so whatever I can get from their plumbing aisle is what I have to work with. I'm thinking that a reducer fitting...
