Keeping it in gear while slowing is much safer in these trucks because you're giving yourself redundant braking capabilities (compression braking + parasitic drive train drag) which can help get you out of trouble if the hydraulic service brakes fail. If freewheeling then you're relying on...
The advantage might be avoiding the fatigue on your left leg and the wear & tear on the clutch parts?
Or maybe there's no advantage and it simply moves the wear & tear from the clutch to the synchros instead...

This arctic grill cover was part of an NOS personnel coolant heater winterization kit for an M35 2.5-ton. The cover is brand new but has some discoloration on the front from getting wet while in storage (best guess from looking at the original box).

Do you happen to know what year your truck was built?
Mine's an '81 and it shows that at some point they revised the grill guard design to incorporate the straight flat bar:
Not sure if I've asked this before but...
I'm curious if these Spicers can handle it or put up with it. I've never tried it myself - just always used the clutch to shift like a pickup truck.
How does everyone row the gears?
Look for wetness on the brake backing plate and at the bottom of the drum that would indicate a leaking wheel cylinder. On mine, it needed 5 of the 6 wheel cylinders rebuilt and it needed its hardened rubber brake hoses replaced.
I would drain the radiator to check and get rid of any nasty...
My mind can't help but fill in the blanks when I glance at my monitor in the morning...
I am an OD addict and I need some help. By "help" I mean more green vehicles 😁
Ah, yes, pulling to the right under hard braking is a clear indication that you now need to purchase a 5-ton. One MV is just not enough and once your deuce has a yard buddy it will start to brake straight again...
Today I tackled the plugged up grease pot on the clutch cross shaft as I worked my way through the Lube Order with my grease gun. Also got the winch side rollers to move and take grease. From the tranny forward is done.
It's easy to overlook (especially in the daylight) but you won't have brake lights or turn signals unless you turn the light switch to STOP LIGHT or SERVICE DRIVE
@Wreckclues inspired me to finally pick up the correct grill cover for my truck. It's an NOS cover that has that lovely canvas smell we all enjoy! 3 of the upper anchor loops on the grill guard did not match up with the cover so I ground off the old screws, drilled and tapped new holes and...
OK, I'll be that guy and throw out the "53s are only rated to sustained speed of 55 mph" warning. How that's interpreted for a 10 ton tire on a 5 ton truck is a can of worms that's been chewed on in several other threads.
On the main topic, I've heard that the math says 72 mph at redline
I hooked into the inboard breaker using a splitter to get power back to the wire that originally was connected to the breaker and then the other wire went to the heater.
