    M923A1 Coolant in Oil

It's deja vu all over again. Just finished my in-frame rebuild in june with similar problem. The initial cause of coolant in the oil is the O-ring seals of the cylinder liners (wet sleeves). No mystery here. The real puzzler is why. My NHC-250 had a piston meltdown and o-ring failure. Could...

Thanks for the complements. This is the first time rebuilding a NHC250, however, I have over 250 text messages from a good friend who has done this type of motor hundreds of times (no exaggeration ) and he helped me with the valves and injectors with his magical touch. I made the tank flusher...

Here's a fuel/fuel tank cleaner I made. I'm to cheap to drain and dispose of 40+ gal. of diesel and the tank needed rinsed out. I remove the drain plug, drain the fuel into a container. The pump sucks the fuel out of container, filters it, then sprays it out of the hose while I direct the stream...

Heating the pistons is necessary to remove and install the wrist pins. Nothing warms the heart like a cookie sheet of pistons going into the oven. It's best to do this while the OCD wife is out of the house for a few hours.

Liners come out with a liner-jack. Make sure you install the new ones carefully. Check and recheck everything.

Cylinder 5 and 6 are really hard to get to. Instrument panel has to come out to get to the dog house cover. Make sure you label every little connector.

Let's look at some pistons. One of these pistons got a little warm. Can you tell which one? Hmmm... Head had aluminum frosting sprinkled with ring bits. This will need reconditioning.

Here's what I found when I pulled the first head (cyl 1 and 2). Piston showing signs of major heat damage.

    M923 questions

Well it’s been almost two years since I bought the truck (I won the auction, but I felt like a loser). Here’s a quick summary of the process. I drained the schmootz (mixture of coolant and oil) out of the crank case and dropped the pan. Lots of metal in there too. I put some water in the...

    M923 questions

The dipstick showed a dark gray oil about two inches above normal, not shiny black. I drew an oil sample and let it sit in a mason jar for a few hours. At the bottom of the jar was a layer of antifreeze that separated out. Don't want to run it for fear of wiping out the lower end bearings. Just...

    M923 questions

I'm a noob to the forum and to the 5-ton-from-GL experience. I went to the GL DRMO site and hastily inspected 65+ m939 series trucks. I started a bunch of them and pared it down to a half-dozen or so nice ones. A bunch of them were RR reconditioned and seduced me with their sexy good looks. I...
