MEP-002A quit generating under full load. Where to start

Haha. But it works now. I plan to clean it up, but the focus was on getting a backup genset going. The electric company finally fixed my underground short and the hurricane missed us, so I probably won't need it for awhile. Hope you didn't get flooded out down there Jim. Dave

MEP-002A quit generating under full load. Where to start

Here is where I mounted mine. Videos aren't working with photobucket. Anyone know a good host? If not, I'll take more still shots. This pic is about worthless for wiring details.

MEP-002A quit generating under full load. Where to start

I will get the pics and video up. It isn't necessary to gut anything like I said before. You can leave everything hooked up except a couple wires to the field excitation.

MEP-002A quit generating under full load. Where to start

As far as I can tell, 3 phase will still work too. I'll test it soon.

MEP-002A quit generating under full load. Where to start

It's fixed!!!!!! I will post a pic later. You can leave all old parts intact. It just requires two wires to the field terminals, and two wires to get L1 and L3 wherever. I landed mine on the reconnection switch. I mounted the new regulator in the ac output box. Literally 4 wires. No...

MEP-002A quit generating under full load. Where to start

I just ordered my sx460. I was discussing field flashing with tech support at Flight Systems. He was saying that it is probably a good idea to keep it hooked up, but to use a diode on the output of the regulators F+ and on the generators field flash circuit so as not to back feed either...

MEP-002A quit generating under full load. Where to start

I plan to keep my ac output box, the voltage selector switch and all for now. I will just remove the knob. I just need to get this thing back up and running. I am concerned about if and how this will flash the field, but I can do something with the existing start switch flashing circuit if...

MEP-002A quit generating under full load. Where to start

Basically your hooking it up to only be 240 VAC. You won't have three phase anymore. All details here: http://www.steelsoldiers.com/showthread.php?109940-Civilizing-the-MEP-002A

MEP-002A quit generating under full load. Where to start

The diode board, the voltage/phase selector switch, cvt-1, reactor, and it would make t-1 and t-2, and the current transducer for the amp gauge of no further value. I think I'll just get some little ct's and some 4-20mA gauges for current draw. Seems like it will be a fun project. I was...

MEP-002A quit generating under full load. Where to start

Haha. I got it out and the windings are fried. The potted side of transformer is all burned up, swollen and cracked by the iris marked "C". I will see what a new one costs tomorrow. Might be easier to do the Flight Systems regulator if this cost much at all. After all this I'm not a big...

MEP-002A quit generating under full load. Where to start

Ok. I just pulled the whole output box and am bringing it in in bench. I was going to pull the selector switch, ct1 and cvt1, to try this. Maybe I can do it in place, but it's tight. Either way, it will be easier on the bench.

MEP-002A quit generating under full load. Where to start

Wow I don't know. I guess I need to pull the whole thing anyway. Worth a try. Could be in the winding though, not just the internal wire to the terminal

MEP-002A quit generating under full load. Where to start

Ok I think I found the problem. Upon testing coils in CVT1 I found no continuity between H5 and H6. ( terminals for wires x38a16 and x11d16). This seems like it would could cause these issues. It looks like a pain to change out! This is where the mouse nest was sitting so I imagine their...

MEP-002A quit generating under full load. Where to start

I appreciate the offer. I appreciate the help. Hopefully it won't be anything big. I'll figure it out yet. The power company has our property on a temporary feed luckily. We have a very long lane and the underground power line shorted. Then of course the generator broke.

MEP-002A quit generating under full load. Where to start

It's not that, I have 10.1 ohms there. I had to go by wire number shown in the chart. I will just have to probe everything I that circuit. Thanks for the help.

MEP-002A quit generating under full load. Where to start

Ok will do when I get home tonight. I didn't see any of the terminals labelled on there, but I will look again and have another look at he manual. Seems easy to just swap out that whole box on the side. I think I can borrow the whole unit. I asked about the VR, and they let me take the...

MEP-002A quit generating under full load. Where to start

Oh and I'm not sad about buying the nice VR!! What would make 0 volts on a good regulator and 165 volts with a bad or no regulator???? Seems like maybe CVT1 since when that's out of circuit, it makes the 165volts (removing wire 17 or installing burnt regulator). How do I even start to test...

MEP-002A quit generating under full load. Where to start

Got my new ac regulator today. I don't think that was the problem though because I still have 0 volts. Odd because I have one really old regulator that puts out 165 vac, then mine and the new one put out .8vac. If I hold the start switch in start it makes proper voltage. I'm trying to...

MEP-002A quit generating under full load. Where to start

Switched out the regulator board to one of unknown condition, and now I have 165VAC. I guess that means the spare board is also bad. These things must go a lot because the one that is making no voltage was not the original to my genset. It has a manufacture date of 1996 and my genset it 1989...

MEP-002A quit generating under full load. Where to start

TripleJim, I just read your classified add. Thats super cool! I may just do that. I'll see what happens with the test unit. They may want the same price for it or it might also be bad.
