Installed a 200 amp alternator and having charging issues now.

To follow up with the problem, I installed a new regulator and the Truck is back to charging. The one i got is pretty fancy with a couple lights on the front. a 28v Light and a 14v Light. I noticed the Volt Gauge is wonky and it will go all over the place if I tap a couple times. Sometimes it...

Installed a 200 amp alternator and having charging issues now.

I charged up the batteries. I disconnected the grounding wire at the 14v terminal. I verified battery voltage at the 28v+ stud (on generator) and the IGN terminal (on regulator) I started the truck and let it ran for about 5 minutes. The voltage climbed to about 24.50 and stayed there. I...

Installed a 200 amp alternator and having charging issues now.

Hey guys! I had a 60 amp alternator that ended up overcharging the whole vehicle and fried the glow plug module, which then fried the glow plugs. I bought a new glow plug module, glow plugs, and a new 200 amp alternator with the voltage regulator mounted on top. The glow plug issue is fixed...

Completely stumped. Will not cold start and put all new parts on it.

Yes, I only tested it a couple times since It appears my vehicle is over-charging. I wouldn't be surprised if that is the reason the start box took a crap in the first place.

Burning out headlights, showing 30+ volts

Hey guys, after I burned up my second set of headlights I decided to test the voltage at the headlight leads to see what was going on. I saw the voltage climb to 30v then I shut off there because I figured something was wrong. I had a glow plug start box go bad, so I have to assume this was...

Completely stumped. Will not cold start and put all new parts on it.

Got the box, temp sensor, and a few other items from Mike @ Black Dog. Put it all together and now the voltage at the glow plugs starts out at 24v for about 10 seconds, then drops to 4.5v for about another 15-20 seconds and shuts off. Seems to be working OK 8)

Completely stumped. Will not cold start and put all new parts on it.

I mean, if you connect your glowplugs backwards I think you have some other more important problems

Completely stumped. Will not cold start and put all new parts on it.

So, I just went out and checked and the glow plug connector is showing 24v. However, it continues to show 24v even after sitting for 5 minutes. Based on what you said it sounds like the controller box is bad supplying a constant 24v to the glow plugs which results in burning up all the glow...

Completely stumped. Will not cold start and put all new parts on it.

So how could the box be toast if I am getting a constant 24v to the glow plugs? It is strange that when i install the known good box the wait light flashes. When I ordered parts I bought specific M998 temp sensors, is there a specific one depending on which box you have? Would brand new...

Completely stumped. Will not cold start and put all new parts on it.

I have 2 M998's and the other one has no cold start issues. I swapped the box from the good truck to this one and it made no difference. However, something strange did happen with the "known good" box. I didn't check the voltage on the glow plug leads, but the wait light would turn on and off...

Completely stumped. Will not cold start and put all new parts on it.

Have a m998 with 9k miles on it. It's all original and in nice shape. About 6 months ago it stopped cold starting and have been trying to figure it out ever since. So far: Each lead to the glow plugs have been verified 24v when the wait light is on. Wait light is on for approximately 10...

Will not start - Tons of smoke

I agree that ether is not the best, but I am going to have to say it's not as bad as you're making it out. I've been using ether on diesel engines for decades and have never had an issue because of it.

Will not start - Tons of smoke

Hey guys, hoping I could get some help on diagnosing the problem with my M998. It was working fine all last summer, but then out of nowhere it didn't want to cold start at all. the "wait" light is coming on and off like normally when I cycle the key. However, now all I get is a ton of white...

Problem 1: I've put 3 sets of headlights in my M998 and they always keep burning out. Anybody know whats happening? These suckers are expensive and want to get it fixed! Problem 2: Out of nowhere this thing will absolutely not cold start at all. The wait light comes on and shuts off like it...

I think Ii have a problem with my glow plugs - Lots of white smoke & wont start

I have a 93 M998 and it just got cold here in Detroit and it won't start. No matter how many times I cycle the the switch to the "ON" position and cycle the glow plugs it won't fire, but it pumps out a ton of white smoke from the exhaust. The WAIT light will come on for about 5-10 seconds then...

    M998 with 7k miles, won't start

Hi, I just bought 2 M998's and I love these! I am excited to become part of the community here. Unfortunately, one of them won't start and it is the truck with 7k miles. Everything is in great shape, so I would assume it is nothing catastrophic. I did some research on the site but was not...
