    Rod bearings, failure mode

    Eventually, it will chew up the crank journal where the rod rides. That's best case. In my humble opinion, eventually, the rod cap fasteners will be weakened, allowing the cap to loosen and at that point, the rod and piston combo will attempt to beat a hasty retreat from inside the block.
