Dave, the older trailers don't have a relay valve at all. The have a single airline that comes from the service side of the truck and goes right to the brake chamber that applies the master cylinder.

If you tape it, you may prohibit it from releasing all the way. You could put in a piece of oil bath air cleaner foam but you will have to tie it in so that when it starts to clog, it's not simply blown away.

There are 2 different braking systems. Those with the relay valve and those without. Those without are very simple. If the air line (only one) is hooked up to the service side of the deuce and the valve is open then it works like this. As you apply brakes on...
