I remember the 4X4 show on cable TV did a 4X4 Bobber out of a deuce. They went with air-bags instead of springs. Looked real good. Air bags are a great way to go for ride comfort. Kenworth-Peterbuilt went to air-bag suspension back in the 1960's . All our busses are also air bag suspension. You...
I knew there was someone here that had or drove a F550 that could add some insight on the whole axle issue. See post number #10 . http://www.steelsoldiers.com/showthread.php?152996-Supporting-14-000-curb-weight
I have used a tree to stop me going down a hill ! It was just a mudslide and the brakes did nothing ! It was either hit the tree or crash and roll at the bottom of the hill !
Of course the model years where different for me. It was driving the 1954 Chevy or the 1948 IHC . Still the same spirit...
Hey David I did my fair share of crazy stuff when I was young and dumb too ! I still have that picture somewhere with me standing on my truck which is sunk almost out of sight in a large pond. If I was going to use larger tires on my deuce I would go with some "Ouverson" larger axles and side...
Thanks. Your a Medic too ?!?! I have wanted to take some Medic classes just for taking care of my immediate family in an emergency. It is an extremely useful skill to have !
I'll also keep my eyes open for any 4X4 IHC's .
There are a lot of 4X4 IHC's down here in Washington due to the logging industry. For the most part 2 wheel drive Medium duty IHC's did come with 2 speed differentials.
By the way, do you think I have a "God" complex like porkysplace thinks ? I think I just don't like BS when it comes to trucks...
Who's talking about 5 tons here ? I was referring to the capability of the deuce. I was asking what you did for your company so I could determine if what you said had any validity. If your where the mechanic who actually maintained these Ford F550's then what you said would carry some weight as...
Where do you work ? You use the Ford F550 as a dump truck ? As far as the mechanics at work, almost all are ASE certified and a lot like me are Master certified. When I applied there where 600 applicants. Three where hired. I was number one. That is normal for all the rest of the mechanics at...
Yes Facts are Facts except when it comes to the actual REAL world. The Ford people along with GMC and Chrysler would have you believe their trucks can tow Trains and Planes and Automobiles all day long. Well that is just not true. What is the actual frame size on the F 550 ? How does it compare...
I went to the Ford site and used their weight capacities chart. The F650 was the closest to the Deuce.
Remember the Deuce can have a GVWR of almost 26,000 Ibs .
If he just wants a basic Bobber to "tool-around" with then these differentials will work for him. If he plans to actually "use" this truck (ie: Haul, Tow, Winch) then he will need stronger axles under it.
I agree with you about "Why else have a truck" . To me a truck is a tool, and if my tools...
The problem is still the weight of that M135. Yes it is a gasser, but do you know how much those silly 6 cylinders weigh ? Also the frame is still the same as a M35 deuce along with that heavy "Dual Range Turbo Hydramatic" transmission. Remember that transmission is made from cast-iron not...
It's not about the power rating of the engine but the axle housings ability to support the load ! The Chrysler 9-3/4" came in the "Hemi Cuda" which had 500 HP ! But you would never put that under a deuce and expect it to support the weight !
I'll give you another example. My TD6 dozer weighs in...
