    Homegrown Tow Bar

The towbar has been finished for a while now. I've pulled a M108 wrecker with it, and a 5 ton tractor so far. It will get used again in a couple weeks to move the 5 ton tractor again and bring back a deuce from Lake City. The finished pics are on page 6, unless your looking for something else...

No its the real deal CARC, that they sell to the military. I used the single component version, it's a type of polyurethane. It sprayed out nice and dried nice, but I don't care for the color that much. It's to green, I like the more brown shade of olive drab. When I get my deuce, I plan on...

    Homegrown Tow Bar

This is the final set of pics. I finished painting it with CARC 383 green from Sherwin Williams, after I sandblasted and epoxy primed it the other day. I put it all together this morning, now as soon as my EUC gets approved I'll be able to use it.

    Homegrown Tow Bar

I can't sell this one, because I'm gonna need it to get my deuce off the GL lot before I can drive it home. I doubt anyone will go for this, but I could build another one in trade for a complete winch set up for my deuce when I get it.

    Homegrown Tow Bar

I was planning on drilling a hole through the tubing into the shank of the end pieces and filling them back up with weld just for extra strength, but after seeing how many passes it took to fill the groove and weld it the way I did so far, I don't think it will go any where. The pieces fit very...

    Homegrown Tow Bar

I was able to work on the tow bar some more today. It's basically done, I just have to sandblast, prime, and paint it.

The main thing is that the lunette ring will fit over the pintle hook you plan on attaching it to. I measued the one on the deuce I'm getting, it had to have a 3" hole and couldn't be any fatter than I think 1 5/8". I made this one with a 3" hole and it's 1 1/2" thick, mainly because I used 6...

    Homegrown Tow Bar

I had the same concern, that's why I sand blasted the pieces before I welded them together. The only portion I didn't weld the seams on is where it goes inside the square tubing, but once I weld it to the tubing it will be sealed off from the outside air anyways. I used a milwakee 4.5" grinder...

    Homegrown Tow Bar

I don't plan on making it adjustable. The legs will be about 6 feet long. Is there much need for the legs to adjust in length? If there is a good reason I could probably incorporate that. I wish I could figure out a way to build these to sell, but the way I did it is too labor intensive to make...

    Homegrown Tow Bar

wdbtchr: Yes I beveled the edges of the laminate pieces before I welded them together, then ground it all flat again. builder77: I think your asking about the raised area between the flat tabs and the square stock. I filled it with weld then ground it down flat. I forgot to take a picture of...

    Homegrown Tow Bar

RE: Re: RE: Home grown tow bar Well I made some more progress the last couple days, all I have left is cut the 2" square tubing to length and weld it all together.

    Homegrown Tow Bar

RE: Re: RE: Home grown tow bar Yea I wouldn't mind, but I only made a pattern for the two center (largest) pieces, and just made up the others as I went. I can probably trace it to a piece of paper, and right out the dimensions if that's what your looking for.

    Homegrown Tow Bar

RE: Re: RE: Home grown tow bar I TIG'ed the initial root pass, then came back and MIG'ed what you see in the pics. Thanks for the compliments, Alex

    Homegrown Tow Bar

I made a patern out of poster board, then layed it out on a sheet of 1/4" plate with soap stone and cut it with a torch.

    Homegrown Tow Bar

I decided to build myself a tow bar. I realize that if I were paying myself to build this, I probably could have bought several factory tow bars, but I think mine will be better in the end. Plus I should only have about $100 dollars out of pocket in mine, I spent $85 of that on the two adapters...
