The end result is the same. The way you get it, is different. Adding the diode, you add an electrical component(that can fail) to get the same result as just using a jumper wire that gets you the same end result. The choice is yours, how you want to modify your system. I prefer simplicity...

You don't need a diode. You can simply connect 21 and 491 at the headlight switch.
