That's a very good point; my primary concern was security - the truck is stored on an air force base, so I suppose it should be pretty secure, but the battery is a new issue. I was hoping to install a knife-switch quick disconnect on the (positive side?) of the battery coming in to the truck...
All I can really find on their site is the 4-terminal Dorman brass starter switch. None of those numbers cross-reference a starter switch that I can see. There's a Napa a little further down the road; I'll check that out like Buch suggested. Thanks!
Hmm, I just called the local store here and they said that number brings up some brake rotors, but no starter switch. maybe I'll go in there and have a look at the switches. I know they didn't have any two-wire switches, but I think they did have a three-wire brass switch - might be the one...
I don't have a NSN for it; I could probably call up Autozone and have them look at the ignition but that may be a local part number. It's just a cheap generic chinese four-wire ignition. I'm going to look online for a two-wire ignition; I'll let you know if I find one.
Well, there's really no problem with leaving the way it is - I can start the truck by turning the key to the on position, then when it starts, return the key to the off position. There's the potential to leave the key in the on position and burn up the starter I suppose, but... I tend to have...
Well, I exchanged the ignition for a new one today. Tested it with the volt meter; the circuit only completes between ignition and the unmarked center post (ground) when the key is against the spring in the crank position. I hooked up my two wires to those posts, flip the accessory on, and...
Ah ha! So I wasn't going crazy. Awesome, I'll take it back to Autozone tomorrow. It's just a generic switch. I thought maybe there was some electrical magic going on when all four wires were hooked up, and that I wouldn't be able to have a normally operating ignition with just two wires...
Well, I just tested the connectivity of the posts while the key was in the "on" position (NOT all the way against the spring) and every combination of the following three posts are talking to each other:
IGN
BAT
Unmarked center post (ground?)
No change when I turn the key all the way against...
Maybe I'm still misunderstanding you, but I don't have a crank hookup. The four hookups I have are:
ACC
BAT
IGN
and one in the middle (unmarked) which I assume is ground.
Okay, I see the error of my ways! It's worth listening to that buzzer if it has the potential to stop a 13,000lb vehicle from slamming into a bus full of kids.
Steelandcanvas, I do have the operators manual - this site graciously provided me with all the documentation I could ever need...
Kohburn, the ignition does have a momentary start position (against the spring like a normal vehicle) but I can't seem to get the wiring hooked up so it operates that way. I turn the key to the on position and the starter turns over, instead of turning the key all the way to the right, against...
I just checked the wiring; one wire was going to "Ignition" and one wire was going to the ground. That seemed correct, but I tried swapping the ground cable to "Battery", but it still operated the same way.
Seems that I can't find the right wiring setup to achieve ignition like a normal...
Well you know what, now that I think about it, I may have the wires hooked up to ground and battery (on this universal starter, accessory is to the left); in which case I would just have to move the cable to ignition to get the proper operation.
Hello again everyone!
I recently removed the push-button ignition and put a universal keyed ignition in the Deuce. On the ignition there are hookups for:
Battery
Accessory
Ignition
Ground
There were only two wires hooked up to my push-button starter. I hooked them up to Ignition and Ground...
