    Electrical short. Now no start, completely dead.

    I'm not a super-electrical fix-it guy but from your description it seems like you still have a big draw (short) on the starting system somewhere. As far as fuse-able links go, I've had one burn on me and that is exactly what it looks like; a short section of wire with it's middle insulation...
