An Aussie 5-ton RV conversion 'Mad Max Winnebago'

Thanks Maverick. @Gruemeyer Sorry for the delayed response. The idea is on the back burner for the moment, as a foreigner the first idea is to head for the big smokes like LA, but that's probably the worst sort of place to go. Indiana sounds better.

Yeah, we're all still part of the Commonwealth so that may be easier. I know it was common for people to get into Aus by first going to NZ. I also have a mate in Canada, he gets around a lot but he may have an address I could use.

Bloody heck, and that's legal? I think the issue authorities have over here is that when you turn a corner the overhang can wipe out a fence or whatever. If you get dry-bogged because your drive wheels are in the air that's your problem. Yep I think that's the issue, I'm sure there are plenty...

An Aussie 5-ton RV conversion 'Mad Max Winnebago'

Yeah that one is pretty cheap. I would be flat out getting new tyres for it for that price over here. It's far from a given that we'll come over, there's a lot of inertia to overcome but the pressure is rising :) However it won't be for some time (6-12 months maybe longer) so anything...

I've been looking at craigslist, this one 81 Motorhome 24' that you linked to DB looks about the perfect size for us I think, maybe even smaller. Looking at some of the larger rigs, how do you guys get away with such huge rear overhangs? We're only allowed 60% of the wheelbase and even that...

Thanks DB, I'll have a look. Although I have my computer back it's with a blank disk and I'm having all sorts of trouble getting stuff to work. Man I hate computers :)

An Aussie 5-ton RV conversion 'Mad Max Winnebago'

Thanks guys, sorry for the delayed response my computer's been in the shop for a week :( We miss the space but not the size, smaller vehicles are much easier to handle and we get to camp in places we would never have taken Mk1. Definately on my list if we get there. Yeah I'm over thinking it...

That doesn't matter much, even if we buy for 10 and sell for 5 we're ahead. But as long as you don't get ripped off on the buy (more likely when you don't know the local system) you should get way more than half back. I think the paperwork to buy is the problem, needs more research.

An Aussie 5-ton RV conversion 'Mad Max Winnebago'

Thanks, there's no rush and I need to look further into how a foreigner can buy anything, but I would say maybe up to $10k for a smallish camper. Assuming we stay for 6 months we could afford to leave it at the airport if it doesn't sell. That's not likely but you have to consider the worst...

An Aussie 5-ton RV conversion 'Mad Max Winnebago'

Not really. I've done some research on buying a vehicle and it doesn't seem to be easy for a foreigner. I think it's not bad in Michigan but that's probably not the best place to buy a camper. Anyway still thinking.

An Aussie 5-ton RV conversion 'Mad Max Winnebago'

I think I'll stick to the idea of buying a camper :) @dburt, no problems, I'll fly you over as soon as you like, all I ask is that you place the price of the fare (plus a small surcharge, shall we say 20%) in my paypal account :) You guys would love the shed I visited the other day, the uncle...

Yep that's right. No $1 and $2 notes any more either. Things still have prices that require 1 and 2c, but if you pay cash they get rounded up or down. ______ Rob

An Aussie 5-ton RV conversion 'Mad Max Winnebago'

Not bloody likely, it would be cheaper for me to pay for you to fly over (don't get exited, that isn't going to happen :)) No if we do come over I would buy a small RV or even a camper, sell it at the end of the trip, get all/most of my money back and Robert is your father's bother. Not these...

An Aussie 5-ton RV conversion 'Mad Max Winnebago'

That's a coincidence, I thought exactly the same when I was in the States :) Try going to Scotland, I asked for directions once and after a couple of minutes the only words I understood were "wee hoos".

And pass maybe 50 cars in that time :) Well maybe more than that but there ain't much out there. We might pass each other, we're thinking about going to the US. ______ Rob

I miss some of the features Mk1 had but I don't miss trying to squeeze a large truck into a small campsite. We spent 3 months living quite comfortably in our Landcruiser and decided that we didn't need such a large vehicle. Also most of the storage we had was empty and we were pretty heavy. All...

Hi Guys, Wade (802dot1q?) alerted me to this thread and invited me to say g'day, so "g'day". I'm happy to answer any questions, meanwhile I'll try to address some of the above comments. Yep, I don't like bonneted trucks for that reason, OTOH it's a pain to work on the motor with a non-tilting...
