The deuces have a smaller exhaust pipe diameter than the M939 series 5-tons. I think it's about 3.5" diameter, vs. the 4" diameter exhaust on my M923.
The cap would melt, too, if it got hot. I suspect that after a long drive, I'd need to let the exhaust tip cool off before putting the plug in...
Yup, good idea! Of course, if I ever buy that box of 50 of them, I'll just dump them all in the empty compartment at the end of the battery box, and never worry about not having one. ;)
I got the Caplug samples and tried them out today. Part number T-502 fit very nicely inside the end of the pipe. As an experiment, I pulled the emergency stop to keep the engine from actually starting and then cranked it for a moment, and the caplug popped right out and landed a few feet away...
I thought of something else to try out. I ordered samples of a few different sizes of those red tapered disposable plastic hole plugs/caps (Caplugs) . One of them should fit over the outside of the pipe, and one of the other two should fit inside the end. Maybe I'll just leave the pipe as it is...
So, the regular, open tube pointed to the right rear and slightly downwards does the best job of keeping stuff out?
I've wondered about this, too. Of course, some exhaust will come out that hole, too.
The muffler shop I went to had 4" pipe, but they didn't have the right kind of coupling flange, and I didn't want to cut up my bent pipe to harvest the coupler. So I put the bend back on and pushed dirt around with my Bobcat instead. :)
Maybe I'll cut the bent pipe to a different angle tomorrow.
Yeah, that is pretty clanky!
I'm about to head out to run errands, and I plan to stop by a muffler shop to see if they can make me up a straight piece of pipe with the right flange on one end. It's not a simple flare; instead, there's a separate flange welded on for the coupling to the muffler...
BTW, in case the pictures weren't clear enough: The flapper isn't stuck open because of interference from the pipe; it's stuck open because that's the natural angle it wants to hang. I just slapped it on there with the clamp a bit crooked for the picture. It was raining, and I didn't want to...
Thanks, but that won't work. The end of the stock exhaust pipe on the M923 points slightly downwards, and this particular flapper is balanced such that it wants to hang straight up and down. Moving or modifying the clamp doesn't affect that.
I'll see if I can get the videos to work for me... I'm on a cell phone for my internet connection! :(
I think that my tail pipe bend is only about 90 degrees, but the whole stack including the muffler is tilted a bit away from vertical. That tilt is what puts the end at the wrong angle for the...
I'm starting to warm up to the straight stack, especially since I can try it and switch back if I change my mind. I may also put the end up higher than the stock curved pipe. With the flared joint at my muffler outlet, it'd be easy to pull the stack off to reduce height. I still need to verify...
I had to head outside to get something from my daily driver anyway, so I took a quick peek at the 5-ton. Yup, a nice flared fitting just after the muffler. So, it'd be easy for me to replace the curved piece with a straight one, and keep the curved piece in case I ever change my mind. Maybe I'll...
Looks good, Brian. I like the curved look better for my truck, but I'll keep the straight stack idea in mind. I think that such a tall stack would need to be removed in order to get my truck into my workshop (after I dig out a truck-sized hole from all of the junk in my shop, that is). Now, if...
Thank you! Do you mean to cut off some of the existing counterweight to change the balance, or cut off some of the pipe to change the end angle? I'm leaning towards the latter, as long as it won't cause problems like letting rain drip down into the pipe despite the flapper.
After diverman's...
I decided to install an exhaust flapper on my M923 to keep rain and wandering monsters out of the exhaust pipe. I tried a paint can first, and found that it didn't sit on the exhaust pipe nicely because of the big bend at the end of the pipe. So, I got a nice-looking 4" flapper off eBay, painted...
