    Re: seperating water from oil with out a heat sourse? Are you asking why paint it black ? If so, it's because it absorbs more heat . . . solar gain. And we, or at least me, have a metal tank that I use to separate.

    I've found the easiest for me is to have a tank (we use one that's about 250 gal) setting on it's side (on a frame up off the ground) w/ a slight incline.
