    Cummins 6CTA8.3 Injection Timing

There is another path to doing it. The injection pump timing can also be adjusted inside the pump by a calibration shop with a pump flow bench. You can pull the pump, and send it to a pump shop. Tell them it is currently timed at 8 degrees, and you want it timed at 16 degrees instead. They...

    Cummins 6CTA8.3 Injection Timing

6 speed and spare 8.3L is scrapped. Got like $62 for all of it. Would have rather one of you had it, but nobody wanted a 1:1 final gear trans, or to ship the stuff. Sorry I never did this to mine, but I fully understand how to and would be happy to talk anybody through it. Feel free to...

    Cummins 6CTA8.3 Injection Timing

The timing pins on the pump and engine gear case rear will only depress in at one point each. Pull the pump gear off, rotate each until the pins can each be pushed in, then bolt the pump gear back on. That will set the timing back to the stock 8 degrees. Don't forget to pull both pins back...

    Cummins 6CTA8.3 Injection Timing

You'll pop the pump gear off like you did, then back the crank pulley up 6 degrees by rotating it counter-clockwise when viewed from the front. Then cinch the pump gear back on.

    Cummins 6CTA8.3 Injection Timing

That's not yours, it has an $800 electric lift pump on it. Nice fit though, looks stock.

    Cummins 6CTA8.3 Injection Timing

16 degrees is what the majority of all the 8.3L RV guys run that seek mileage and power gains. They were the largest group of personally owned 8.3's I could find, that tinker with them. Our stock timing is 8 degrees, theirs is 12'ish, and they were noting gains of 2-3mpg by moving to 16, and...

    Cummins 6CTA8.3 Injection Timing

If you are asking me, I bought a 400hp Cummins ISL (8.9L) common rail EFI + VGT roller cam engine from a 2005 RV. I did it just to whip Simp's truck next time he comes poking around MI again. Install during Sept. Timing bump on any 8.3L should help mileage greatly though, and small power bump.

    Cummins 6CTA8.3 Injection Timing

That is just for build variance discrepancies, ease of mounting. All 6 injector lines would need to be bent, and there may be a hidden pump support bracket that would not line up anymore. Yanking the gear from the front is super easy and you only need to remove the plastic cover with the tach...

    Cummins 6CTA8.3 Injection Timing

There are a lot of knowledgeable and experienced people here. Please consider their opinions also, across all topics.

    Cummins 6CTA8.3 Injection Timing

Yes it is possible. General consensus is if you want to exceed 300hp, then you should. Up to that point, not necessary. You can turn the MW up, increase the injection timing, and add larger injectors. To keep EGT and smoke down, after 300hp you will also need to remove the after-cooler...

    Cummins 6CTA8.3 Injection Timing

Timing adjustment can be done right on the engine. Also does not require a high pressure feed pump to do so. The Harbor Freight steering wheel puller fits the pump gear perfectly, and even includes the correct bolts. Does not require to pull the pump at all. You could pull the pump and...

    Cummins 6CTA8.3 Injection Timing

Wanted to post a link to a well described method of injection timing check and adjustment, via the spill port method. This is decently written, and for a P7100 pump, but same method is used for the MW pump, or most any inline pump for that matter (A, P, MW, etc...)...

    Cummins 6CTA8.3 Injection Timing

Good news for others. Some additional digging reveals that you can do this with the hand prime button and not 300psi. Simply remove the delivery valve core from the delivery valve holder, which is directly under where the injector line attaches to the pump. I'll probably surrender the 300psi...

    Cummins 6CTA8.3 Injection Timing

Bought the 14mm banjo adapter fittings, and confirmed the electric pressure washer can be dialed down to the target 300psi. We're clear for launch. When I'm done, it will make a cool flame thrower.

    Cummins 6CTA8.3 Injection Timing

Will, that was the response I was looking for when I published that I was going to run diesel fuel through my pressure washer. :) I already bought the gear puller, so I need to get a banjo adapter fitting and a plug to block the banjo outlet port and then away we go.

    Cummins 6CTA8.3 Injection Timing

Yeah. This is right out of the Cummins service manual, 300-370psi. I read where some have done it simply with the hand primer built into the fuel pump.

    Cummins 6CTA8.3 Injection Timing

This will be a great one for everybody to armchair quaterback: To do the spill port method of setting injection timing, which is supposed to be the most accurate, I need to remove the delivery valve contents, and then put a short tube in #1 injector output pump fitting, block the injection...

    Cummins 6CTA8.3 Injection Timing

Sorry for my tardiness on this. I was going to mark out some masking tape for the diameter of my balancer, but I instead got lazy and bought the Cummins magnetic timing tape kit with magent pointer. Fits a variety of balancer sizes. Getting ready to finally take some base line data and then...

    Cummins 6CTA8.3 Injection Timing

Bumper for anybody wanting to advance timing on their 8.3L. I just got off the phone with Industrial Injection, and they quoted $126 to "calibrate" the pump, meaning check/adjust on a flow bench, including altering the timing to your #. If one does not want to advance the timing via the crank...

    Cummins 6CTA8.3 Injection Timing

Diagram showed it to be flatties, and it is an older design. I have not had mine apart yet, and hope not to! It is a low cost, high volume, medium duty production engine. I have heard it is the highest volume engine Cummins has ever produced, but maybe that was before the Dodge Ram unit...
