What have you done to your CUCV today/lately - Part 2

Got the truck in the shop for it's yearly maintenance. Lots of things to do. Relocated the batteries from under the hood to inside the cab behind the seat. Got the wiring buttoned up today. Ordered new spindles, this time I'm running bushings instead of needle bearings since the last set didn't...

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately - Part 2

Installed a set of ORD/alcan front leaf springs, new bushings, brake lines, and calipers. Replaced the inner axles seals. Got the carrier to drop in by placing a small heater on the housing, and putting the carrier in the freezer. The temperature difference between the two was 100+ degrees...

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately - Part 2

Well it's time for my annual maintenance on my daily driver M1008. Have a long list of things to do this time around. So far, I have done the rear main seal, oil pan, front timing cover, water pump, and cleaned up the alternators/pulley alignment. Still left to do is the front axle and...

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately - Part 2

Well it's been an interesting few weeks. Loud pop/bang while driving the ol cucv down hill which turned out to be the front leaf spring breaking. First time I've ever had a truck break a leaf spring, and these specific springs were purchased just last year so they certainly weren't old. Sourced...

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately - Part 2

Went to start my daily driver cucv and got smoke rising from under the hood. Found a battery ground had burnt the insulation off. Suspected a glow plug issue so I replaced the burnt ground and removed the glow plug card. Installed a push button to cycle the plugs manually. Tried again to start...

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately - Part 2

Installed a new fuel tank, staps and sending unit/lines. The fuel tank frame brackets were in poor shape, so cleaned them up with new hardware and fresh paint. Drove the truck out of the shop and when I later went to fire the truck up for fuel, the starter wouldn't engage. Pulled starter and...

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately - Part 2

Installed ORD steering brace, 2 inch Tuff Country springs, ORD greasable shackles/bushings. Still need brake lines and shocks. Truck had a two inch sag on the driver's side before installing the new suspension. Upon disassembly I found the driver's side center pin broke, and the bushings worn...

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately - Part 2

I believe the relay is triggered by ignition on, and ground then completes through the harness at the six position ground terminal. Fixed my gen2 light and voltmeter by tracing the ignition circuit that was lacking voltage at both relays. They are powered by a .8 pink and black wire, 139F and...

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately - Part 2

Yes. I tried another test to confirm my suspicion with the grounding issue at both the gen2 alternator and voltmeter circuit. I plugged the voltmeter into the factory harness and this time added a temp/trial ground via some alligator clips. Voltmeter worked correctly and showed both alternators...

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately - Part 2

So I have some interesting results from my checks. 10 amp fuse checked out good. The voltmeter works when isolated from the factory plug and shows both alternators to be charging correctly. Pulled the two pin plug from each alternator to check for battery voltage there. Gen 1 showed 13.1V at...

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately - Part 2

I was under the impression that the voltmeter was a 12v unit that used the 300ohm resistor to cut the 24v feed down to 12v. Tried it with both the resistor on and off the meter. But your post made me curious so I tried it hooked to the 2nd battery and it worked! Learned something new. I am...

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately - Part 2

Grounded the pink fuel tank lead with the ignition on and the gauge read empty, which confirms the bad sending unit. Decided to look into the non working votlmeter while I was doing electrical work today. Took the voltmeter out and hooked it to the battery with some alligator clips and got no...

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately - Part 2

Cleaned and wire brushed the factory ground strap from the fuel tank sending unit to the frame and replaced the ring terminal at the sending unit. Fuel gauge still reading past full. Will continue testing tomorrow.

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately - Part 2

Group 31 batteries, I didn't extend the tray. I just let the batteries overhang a bit.

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately - Part 2

New heater core, new power steering pump, new harmonic balancer and seal, oil cooler lines, front and rear diff service, rear pinion seal, put both batteries on the rear tray with new terminals and cleaned up the old cable routing.

Cut a piece of old fuel line to guard the knuckles when taking off the fuel cap on my 85 M1008 with a VFD installed flatbed
