2000 mile road trip in an FMTV

I think he's mistaken. Even the manual states that the 58 gallon tank of fuel is designed to give it an operating range of 300 miles. So they were only expecting us to get a little over 5 MPG.

2000 mile road trip in an FMTV

That seems about right. I get 5-7 MPG in my LMTV, depending on driving conditions.

2000 mile road trip in an FMTV

Thanks, I wasn't sure which of the three axles it was "inter".

2000 mile road trip in an FMTV

When you use the phrase "interaxle differential", are you talking about a gizmo between the two rear axles, or the differential inside the transmission/transfer case that locks when in MODE? Because when I'm thinking through what he's saying, the differential in the transmission shouldn't cause...

2000 mile road trip in an FMTV

Slowing down is good, but even more important is that you don't want to hang out at speeds where there is a large resonant vibration. So even speeding up through a vibration zone is better than staying in one that is at a lower speed.

Is it normal that the middle axle is 60-degrees hotter than the other two?
  7. Awesomeness

2000 mile road trip in an FMTV

Thanks. Yeah, I understand the "know your vehicle" idea, but this gives me some context. Since I only have this one vehicle, and have never had another FMV or checked temps before, without this context I could be looking at problems and thinking they are normal. For example, I could be like...

2000 mile road trip in an FMTV

While I know that an IR thermometer checks temperatures, I've never used one to check the temperatures of anything you listed. Can you share what is normal (because I'm sure it's all normally "hot"), specific things you're looking for (e.g. "If I see one u-joint hotter than the other by about...

2000 mile road trip in an FMTV

Can you elaborate? I thought that a major point of the FMTV program was to use as many commercial off the shelf components as possible. To me these seem like the easiest military trucks to fix WITHOUT a military support system, unless I'm missing something.

What exactly are you looking for?

2000 mile road trip in an FMTV

Entirely possible. I never investigated because I didn't previously realize they were supposed to be brighter.

2000 mile road trip in an FMTV

Yep, I have mine on Panel Bright with the rheostat turned all the way up, still very dim like it's backlit with a candle. Not a big deal, but it's good to know they should be brighter. I'll take apart the panel one day... maybe the bulbs are darkened over on the inside, or something is dirty.

Interesting. It could just be your picture, but my gauges are not nearly that bright, even on full brightness. They are barely visible, even it very dark conditions. I guess I'll have to look into that.

2000 mile road trip in an FMTV

It's way better to know it came from another forum member. Many of these trucks seem to be owned by yahoos that only make me wonder how they manage to keep them running, or people buy them at auction and manage to just barely get them running again to sell (which means it's not much better than...

2000 mile road trip in an FMTV

It can only be measured while the shaft is out of the truck, and installed in a lathe (or other precision rotating machine). That's why I mentioned it, because there is no way to check or know. If you start to have an issue, and it could be vibration related (e.g. water pump bolts coming...

2000 mile road trip in an FMTV

I don't have a link, sorry. I've seen them on eBay. I'm not sure if I posted about it, but my front shaft wasn't just put back together "out of phase" (twisted), but also had excessive runout and balance problems after being reassembled correctly. Tolerance is 0.005" for runout, and mine was...

2000 mile road trip in an FMTV

I wish I had your luck. It seems like when mine breaks it does so spectacularly, and it can't get running until I find some obscure military-only parts, have parts custom made, rebuild something, etc. I've yet to have an issue that I could even get the truck somewhere without parts. I even...
  18. Awesomeness

2000 mile road trip in an FMTV

That's like a $3000 list of parts to bring. At that point, you might as well just pay $3000 to have it shipped. I don't know if you can realistically "predict" any parts to bring. Tools sure, but parts-wise you never know what is going to break, and there really aren't any "these things happen...
