Head gasket replacement tips and tricks.

Give me a heads up a few days prior and I can shoot down for the afternoon. With my back I can't do a lot of heavy lifting but I can give you an extra set of boots on the ground and turn a wrench or two.

No worries. If you need anything just shoot me a line. If your doing a full pull It may be a good idea to check out your clutch pack and all those other transmission "goodies" while your in that far. I know the trans is a bear to pull by itself. ( been there, done that)

If you wind up needing a new set of heads I have a line on a good pair (local). There LDS heads. I do know with all the torque needed for these heads that the studs will sometimes stretch and need replaced. Might not be a bad idea if your this fat into it.

It has been several months and a few hundred miles since the rebuild. All of it has been highway miles and I must say I am pleased. Not to jinx anything but I have seen no leaks and she is still running strong. It used to be all I could do to keep her at a respectable 48mph on the highway. Now...

Head gasket replacement tips and tricks.

A wise man once said. "There are only two kinds of deuces out there. Ones that have had there head gasket replaced and ones that will". There are only two things I didn't do while I had her apart which I wish I had. Hind site being 20/20 I should have taken my injectors and had them...

Looks right to me. Did you account for the freeze plug on the right bank of the block under the data plate.

You are correct sir. But don't forget the three (6 total) on the intake side of each head.

Finding A soldier "B" is a good idea. It does take some finesse. If there is any excessive rust or pitting on the sides of the exhaust manifold mounting tabs you may want to go after it with a wire brush. If you still can't get it to go I would hit the sides of each tab with an angle grinder...

Head gasket replacement tips and tricks.

There are 8 freeze plugs per head (16 in all) and a total of 3 separate sizes. I looked forever for the sizes to no avail. It doesn't say in the TM I used 9-2320-209-34-2-1 but I could swear I had it written down around here somewhere. I'll keep looking unless someone else chimes in. If you look...

Head gasket replacement tips and tricks.

I followed the TM and put the intake on first. The trick I learned through trial and error was to install the intake but not tighten it down completely until you have the exhaust manifold mounted up first. (hang them both loosely and work them both on at the same time) Do not try to persuade...

There was a hairline crack between the exhaust and intake valve on my rear head last cylinder closest to the firewall. It was reparable thankfully. They pulled the valves welded the crack and reseated the valves then pressure tested the head.

I took my time and made sure everything was clean, painted, and in good order. I took the time to rent a thread chase and chased everything from the head bolts to the manifold bolts. That project in itself took a day. With all the disassembly, parts cleaning / soaking, old gasket scraping, bolt...

Tell me about it. I was holding my breath the entire way. Every little squeak or creek she made I was freaking out. I think I spent the whole trip staring at the gauges instead of the road. It's defiantly a testament to the M35 series of trucks and that LDT engine.

sorry it took some time to post the picks and get the job done but here it is. The first four picks are of the break down. It was a one man job and quite simple by following the TM page for page. I have read several threads that debate taking off or leaving the turbo on. I elected to take it...

Head gasket replacement tips and tricks.

A few days ago I degrease the inside of the hood and the entire engine. Then I poured some "head gasket stop leak" into my radiator. It has seemed to work for now. I'm hoping it will work till I can get enough saved up to do the job right. I drove it I drove it over 200 miles on Saturday and...

Just called Memphis. They do have the full upper replacement gasket set (in stock) which includes the new head gaskets. Not sure, can I list there price on the thread with out getting yelled at?

Manny thanks to all who have or will contribute to this thread. It is all valuable information. One of my main issues will be funds available for this project. As most of you may know I'm retired military and disabled. I have a set of the older gaskets given to me by a friend. However, In...

Head gasket replacement tips and tricks.

Seth_0, Thanks for the suggestions. I would have never thought of the freeze plugs inspection. I do plan on replacing all soft hoses. What did you use to clean your turbo components and injectors if you don't mind me asking. Is it just a gas soak and a stiff brush or is there a better solvent...

Head gasket replacement tips and tricks.

I will be replacing the front head gasket on my M35a2c multifuel this weekend. Don't worry, I'm not asking how to. I've read the TM for this particular undertaking and it seems rather straight forward. I already have the gaskets I need including valve cover, both head and exhaust manifold...
