1969 LCVP (Landing Craft, Vehicle, Personnel)

Yeah the boat kind of stands out in a yard of green vehicles, the fact that it's beached in one spot doesn't help either. Still, I couldn't pass it up for the price. Since I sold the bridge truck I'm basically in the boat and step deck for the cost of moving them. Maybe one day I'll have the...

1969 LCVP (Landing Craft, Vehicle, Personnel)

Since I bought the LCVP I've been trying to find out how it ended up in VT. The previous owner had passed away about 2 years ago and his son didn't know where it came from, it just showed up in their yard in the mid to late 1990s. The yard that I work out of has been a military surplus yard...

1969 LCVP (Landing Craft, Vehicle, Personnel)

The winch works like it should. There is only 1 ramp cable still together and it's all rotten so we didn't lift the ramp very high as I'm sure it'd still hurt a bit when the cable breaks and hits ya.

I still need the winch pictured above picked up but I just got another one of the same size, it's a 2 ton Beebe Bros winch. Luckily the 2 section drum is still on the boat as that seems hard to find (but easy to make), most I've seen are just setup for one cable. On the LCVP the Starboard side...

1969 LCVP (Landing Craft, Vehicle, Personnel)

While back up at the former home of the boat I mentioned some of the parts that were missing to the owner's son, including the original horn. He said he saw a horn somewhere and there it was right on a shelf, so I'm pretty happy about that. Probably not the easiest piece to find, it's 24v too...
  6. Evil Dr. Porkchop

1969 LCVP (Landing Craft, Vehicle, Personnel)

I think that was one reason they made one. I'm sure years back they would have been all over a parts boat to rebuild, I'd be surprised if they'd want anything now that their boat is on display. Even though it's in "terrible" shape it was really neat to see, especially since it wasn't...
  7. Evil Dr. Porkchop

1969 LCVP (Landing Craft, Vehicle, Personnel)

I believe it's a 1956 according to the serial number. The owner got it in the mid 80s and had it in the water for a year, so it's probably been sitting in that spot a while. I'm sure the New Orleans museum could have done a really great boat using all the metal and parts from one like this...

1969 LCVP (Landing Craft, Vehicle, Personnel)

Some pics of the wooden LCVP I mentioned the other day. Needs some work! I don't believe this would stay together when hoisted or go down the road in one piece. I do have the opportunity to acquire it, and as much as I don't want to put the time and money into getting it out of there I...
  9. Evil Dr. Porkchop

1969 LCVP (Landing Craft, Vehicle, Personnel)

Yes at this point it's very likely that the number on the side is original and it's off the Boulder. Here are a couple close ups from the two pics I posted near the top of this page. The first looks like it's #2 to me, and the paint looks the same as mine. The second picture is also #2...
  10. Evil Dr. Porkchop

1969 LCVP (Landing Craft, Vehicle, Personnel)

    684. So the 4th boat on the 1968 contract if I'm not mistaken.
  11. Evil Dr. Porkchop

1969 LCVP (Landing Craft, Vehicle, Personnel)

Pretty much no history at this point, other than the number on the side indicates it came off the USS Boulder. I believe it was built by Mairinette Marine in Wisconsin. I believe it was sitting in the yard I got it from since the later 1990s, no idea how it got there or where it came from...

1969 LCVP (Landing Craft, Vehicle, Personnel)

It kind of does look like that. There used to be strips bolted there, I'm guessing wood but maybe metal.

1969 LCVP (Landing Craft, Vehicle, Personnel)

Hey NDT, any chance the boat you pulled around is still around and in need of armor? I know there is one still around down there... An owner of a 1950s wood LCVP found me and I had a chance to look over the boat; armor is there, winch is there, gate is there, basically looks like it was taken...

1969 LCVP (Landing Craft, Vehicle, Personnel)

I'm definitely not an expert on these but I believe the purpose of the long ramp is to keep the ship itself off the beach for the most part. The world war 2 era LSTs with the bow door would run up on the beach, but are a different design. The idea behind both being to roll equipment directly on...

1969 LCVP (Landing Craft, Vehicle, Personnel)

Yes the hull is fiberglass with steel plating along the cargo area. WWII era boats were made of wood instead of fiberglass. A couple pictures of the USS Boulder: The first is a US Navy photograph from April of 1971 while it's still in the shipyard. The original file is huge and if you zoom...

Had to do it while the m151a2 was out:hammer::

1969 LCVP (Landing Craft, Vehicle, Personnel)

Now it's actually done.:-) The 40ft stepdeck came home behind the LT9000 with my brother behind the wheel. At some point military clearance lights with Packard connectors were added. It should be a good match behind the ex-Air Force Ford once both are all fixed up.
  18. Evil Dr. Porkchop

1969 LCVP (Landing Craft, Vehicle, Personnel)

A few pics of the interior of the boat: After going over the basics we've got the bridge truck running and driving in the yard. The throttle sticks a bit but it didn't take much to get it going after sitting for at least 5 years. The tank was drained so we're running it off a 5 gallon can on...
  19. Evil Dr. Porkchop

1969 LCVP (Landing Craft, Vehicle, Personnel)

Well... it's done.:) ADM Hauling did the trucking and Guerrina Crane did a great job lifting the boat, both were very reasonably priced too. Much cheaper than having a wrecker company move it all. We used the pipe truck to winch the bridge truck on to the trailer, it's much easier to move...

1969 LCVP (Landing Craft, Vehicle, Personnel)

Yep the bridge truck is a beast compared to a 2.5ton, I think it's almost 20,000lbs heavier than an m35. Definitely a cool rig.
