My reserve unit was disbanded right when I retired. We are still extremely tight. We all chat often online and at least some of us attend reunions annually. I think we are a bit of an anomaly.

Never knock the NG. There are lots of pro's in the NG. Guys who have several years active, hate moving and get out, to join the NG. Still might have to deploy, but PCS'ing every 3 years is no longer a problem. I only met a few NG's while on active, but they were good troops.
This is no tall tale. In the early 70's, there was simply no money/repair parts in Europe. All the big funds went to RVN. The war was winding down. Congress was not giving the DOD the big money anymore. We had gen sets that had a low fuel level "switch", that was nothing more then a copper...
During both Iraq wars, all units made things and spent money on everything from Hillbilly armor for trucks, to LBE and weapons. Its always been that way.
