I know I skipped the "weight" part in your quote ([thumbzup]), if you are not only trying to replicate the look & feel of the gun box but also the methods used to assemble one, you may have to bite the proverbial bullet and go with steel on this...
Find this interesting. Are you saying that if I want to build a copy of "OTTO" for example and there's another guy out there already building a replica of OTTO, I can't build my "OTTO"? Is there a governing body on guntruck building or does to many OTTOs spoil a rally? I'm curious to know...
Really? I would have thought that stuff (in the thickness you'd need) would have been really expensive. As for getting paint to stick, guess you could rough up the surface a bit with sand paper or media blast it.
I don't know, the "visable gun box" could take it's place...
Although it would be really expensive, how about plexiglass/lexan/poly carbonate stuff? You could make the "visable gun truck" -an educational tool for all those who've ever wondered what was inside one of those vehicles......:lol...

You may be stuck between a rock & a hard place when it comes material selections for this project. The aluminum is going to be lighter but more expensive while the steel being less expensive, will be much heavier. I've heard of some of these gun truck" tributes"...
Not sure what it would cost but how about aluminum? you could use relatively thick sheets of it which would give rigidty and the appearance of "heavy armor plate" w/o all the weight. Not sure what aluminum is going for these days. Another advantage is that it is metal and won't have a wood...

Try contacting Maddawg308 on this site. He was building an M37 guntruck and had the plates already fab'd up. He'd know the thickness and be able to answer your question.
