The 34/78 is the OEM size, but for my inventory needs its way easier to just stock a single size that fits both 802s and 803s. I have not found any performance difference to speak of with the different size.

Permanently hooks to both batteries. Just unplug the side receptacle before use (it can stay installed) so it doesnt charge while the alternator is charging under use.
Yup. The least expensive AGM I have found that works well in this is the Champion AGM Group 51R

Lead acid batteries work fine for this too, never hurts to keep whatever technology you go with on a battery tender...
Do yourself a favor in the future... punch a 2" hole somewhere in the case of the machine and install one of these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009ANV81S/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It will allow you to place a battery tender in the machine so this doesn't happen again.
