    MEP003a Unstable Voltage

Good morning and a happy Easter to all! I had some time yesterday to find the other two diodes. I unbolted the end cover to the generator head. Having the ability to move the end cover was a huge help in removing & installing the diodes. I cleaned up the bases for the diodes and tightened...

    MEP003a Unstable Voltage

Ok ok, I'll try and get out tomorrow after work.

    MEP003a Unstable Voltage

Hmm I knew I was getting off too easy. I'm guessing since it's a 12 pole generator that there are 12 diodes. As for the access, I'm thinking you have to remove the grill cover and to do that you need to remove the entire generator head? If so, I'm going to reinstall the 4 I cleaned up and...

    MEP003a Unstable Voltage

Hey Jim, thanks for the info. Where are the other ones? The wiring diagrams leave a lot to be desired

    MEP003a Unstable Voltage

Since the ohm meter was not accurate for me, I went ahead with the light bulb test. I applied 12 volts to each side of the diode and used a 12v test light to check the other side of the diode. Here are my results: Diode 1 - Power on wire, light on threads - Power on threads, NO...

    MEP003a Unstable Voltage

This is how I'm testing them. Some times it works, some times it doesn't.

    MEP003a Unstable Voltage

I have all the diodes unbolted from the brackets. Its been really tough with the multi-meter to determine if it's bad or not. I'm going to try the light bulb method now. Do all the diodes the test same way? Have the light on the nut end of the diode and apply 12v to the wire feeding the diode?

    MEP003a Unstable Voltage

Ok gotcha. I doubt I have that on my meter. I'll have to ask my electrical engineering buddy.

    MEP003a Unstable Voltage

Thanks for the advice Jim. Its not a hard job but tough to get too. The bottom set will be very difficult to access. What should the diodes register? How many ohms? I'll try and work on it this week. As long as the temps are not too cold.

    MEP003a Unstable Voltage

I went out early this morning and doused the AC voltage switch with wd-40. I got the switch to work as intended. I didn't have a chance to start up the unit since it was early on a sunday. What do you guys suggest with the diodes? Clean them up with some baking soda? Or are they shot?

    MEP003a Unstable Voltage

Got out to the genset today. Took off the back cover off of the generator head and looked the excitor wires. Every thing looked intact. I poked around and no broken wires. I blew out the generator housing. Lots of dust and dirt hiding in there. I started her up and no voltage. I checked pin 27...

    MEP003a Unstable Voltage

Im going to investigate where to find the exciter wires. I would like to rule it out before I order a new VR. I hope its the VR so I can put these gremlins to rest!

    MEP003a Unstable Voltage

Sorry for the long wait time. I went out a tested pin 27 on the starter switch. While holding the switch to start after the set was running, I had 23.7 volts on the pin. I had no AC voltage. I tried turning the switch to start after the set was running and it did not change the AC voltage. An...

    MEP003a Unstable Voltage

I will start the set this afternoon and test the starter switch. I usually hold it for a second or two after the unit is running. I'll also take a picture of the switch. Only have a video that shows the switch and I can't upload videos off my phone.

    MEP003a Unstable Voltage

Finally had some daylight hours to continue the diagnosis of the genset. I went into the control area and tightened down every screw connection I could see. Also when to the distribution box and tighten down T3. After starting up the unit, I was reading 140 volts on the 110/220 setting. The...

    MEP003a Unstable Voltage

Thanks Jim for the info. That's good to know. So when running the engine below 1800rpm, what does that affect? Also is there any other way to tell what rpm the motor is running besides the frequency gauge?

    MEP003a Unstable Voltage

When I first bought the unit, the throttle cable was broken. In the process of getting her running and then replacing the cable, the unit did idle. Not for extended times but a few minutes here and there. My question is, do the transistors fail imediately or take time to fail? The unit ran...

    MEP003a Unstable Voltage

Jim, The video was with the battery connected. After the video, I did reconnect the wires as they should be on T3. The gen gave The same results with the voltage swinging. I have not been back outside to work with the unit anymore. It's been 20 degrees or less lately so I haven't been...

    MEP003a Unstable Voltage

Ive been repairing my mep003a recently. It was producing electricity as it should and then I moved the unit from the truck to trailer. I went to start up the unit the other day and now while having the selector on 120/240 volts, the voltage gauge was reading 140 volts. I tested the lugs and...
