    body armor/run-flat tires?

    Chain mail was primarily developed to stop spears, arrows, knives etc. The rings 'caught' the tip of the weapon, and prevented it from going through, by dissipating energy as the mail was placed under tension-stretching. I think ballistic projectiles are a different threat, with a lot more...
