Was looking for a shop in or near Milwaukee to work on M1008; then did it all myself!

. Good Deal! Glad everyone was happy to see you when you got home. :)

So if a PRESSURE TEST is in your future, go to one of the local parts houses and rent a tester from them. Cheap like spraying soapy water on the exhaust. Not being pushy - but have you looked into that idea? We can dream up expensive things to do... Just hoping to save you a dollar where...

. Try the cheap fix first. Soap and Water is cheap.

. CHEAP easy way to look for exhaust leaks... Low Effort Required - Much easier than all the other stuff you have done! Get yourself a spray bottle. Ladies hairspray, 409, Whatever. Get the water good and hot and fill the bottle 3/4 or so full. Get some good soap. Dawn or something like...

. Will definitely be interesting to see what happens with the other 4. The sad part is if the clicking disappears, you have to put those four back in - one by one to find the problem. Fuel turned up shouldn't be causing the clicking sound you hear...

. Yes sir! Those other ways are pretty good too - especially the blower - if you have extra eyes or hands around to help. SAFETY GLASSES are a must though. Rust chips are bad for the motor but even worse in your eyes! Gotta be careful with cold water on a hot manifold so you don't create a...

. I think what cucvrus was suggesting earlier about the exhaust manifold - with a cool motor - was to check the bolts. Just reach down and put a wrench on those bolts and see if they are tight / snug. The ones that connect the manifold to the block. The other possibility is on the bottom of...

. Dang it! That thought ever even crossed my feeble mind. You could be right on it cucvrus

. Dextron of any type is what you need. It is oil based rather than vegetable based.

. It is amazing what we will make ourselves learn how to do something when it costs us - more money than we want to spend. Good for you! Best part is that you got it AND it worked.

. Never will forget my first new helper when I worked in the truck shop. We were installing a PTO shaft. Octagonal inch and a half (from memory) thick metal. 'Splained how to measure. I don't think he had ever read a ruler. I was standing beside the truck - pad and paper in hand. He calls...

. Hate to say it, but that is pretty stupid on the vendor's part. Stick heavy piece of metal with the fitting exposed in an unprotected box... They could have tied it on a string and let it flop around in the carton and been just as well off. Or, heaven forbid that they stuff that fitting...

Way to go retro_life ! Thanks for the kind words M1009_SPAIN . I feel sure "retro" knows that but I just had to say it. Go man Go! I think an organization like this - where all of us have something to share or something to learn - is what MVing is all about!

. Yep. You don't need the info now, but the same tapered bolt in one end just like a tie-rod end. A swift smack on the "rounded" part where the new shiny piece goes through the tie-rod would have made it pop out too. You will definitely feel a difference driving!

. On the bright side, because it was a little bit difficult - you won't ever forget what you learned!

. Sometimes it helps to have a thin film of RTV on it, but it will be slippery and IMO harder to install. The red coating on the seal should "seal" it to the cover.

. For what it is worth, the rubber looks uniform. Nothing "pooched" out between the two pieces of metal. I can't really tell if that is a crack in the rubber all the way around - or if it is just a compression mark where the rubber is doing its job. Had it been molded differently - with a...

. I'm old, but back in the day of hotrodding cars - I don't remember ever replacing that bolt and washer on a Chevy (gas) engine. LOTS of other things gave up through the years of trying to go fast in a straight line. Never once did I ever lose a harmonic balancer. Never had that bolt even...
