M809 Series- Front axle work and what to expect

How to make me nervous. No way I can check what the previous owner used, just have to hope that polyurea grease at that time (2000-2009) was more expensive, or they did not had it there, or they did not do anything and the last time somebody did something was in the depot or or or...

M809 Series- Front axle work and what to expect

No fording: since 1986 to 1999/2000 in a POMS depot in the Netherlands 100 miles on the meter - then on a private camping ground transporting garbage and white sand, getting to 3000 miles - and since 2010 my property, maybe 100 miles as well. Grease colors do not mean anything? Mine is a nice...

M809 Series- Front axle work and what to expect

Maybe because Ajax MD started this thread on the same topic, and he was talking about the axle seals and knuckle. Should I just put some of the old grease over the spines and leave it at that then?

M809 Series- Front axle work and what to expect

OK, I did NOT touch the axle or the knuckle, only took of the hub, repacked the bearings and installed a new seal. So should I do anything with that axle or just leave it as is for the moment. No time to start do the knuckle and boot stuff, the truck has to move. Also, it looks like the...

M809 Series- Front axle work and what to expect

I use thick heavy duty long rubber gloves for grease, thin gloves for most other things. And an old bed sheet to get the grease off everything beefore, during and afterwards. Grease: I cleaned and packed both bearings in nice new grease. Now I see that the splined part of the axle just...

M809 Series- Front axle work and what to expect

Not sure how putting the bearing in a freezer back will help pack it apart from keeping the mess localized. I had the bearing also laying on a piece of plastic bag and used hands and a thin screwdriver to push the grease in between the rollers. than, when everything looked full, I used the air...

M809 Series- Front axle work and what to expect

I was too quick with stating that everything looked good actually. The brake cylinder definitely had a problem and was leaking. Also, the hub was not as clean as I thought, I just did not look good. Everything is clean now. Cleaned the brake shoe surfaces with grease remover, cleaned out...

M809 Series- Front axle work and what to expect

It has been freezing tonight, about 17 F in Dan's workshop. So we put the brake drum in the kitchen in front of the wood stove, the only really heated room in the workshop. It will stay there today and throughout the night. Will not do much, but it will help a bit. The seal goes into the...

Brutacus, thanks, great pics. Putting the seal in freezer: does that not damage the rubber of the seal?

Did you have any problems putting the seal back? I bought two NOS seals for the 5-tons, really US Army surplus, in the Netherlands. Now packed the bearings, wanting to put the new seal in: no dice, maybe a fraction of a mm too wide. Tried the second one, same. Old one I could get back but also...

Front hub removal M51 A2 I will do a detailed write up later, but here some pics that might help The hub with cap, ready to be taken down. Middle how it looks after you take the grease away, right, the cap full of grease but nothing else. Looks promising. Then ... :shock...

Other thing, if its the last nut with the wheel on, the wheel will be at an angle also frustrating your efforts. Put a few nuts back, at least one opposite of the bad nut and two on each side of it, tighten them good and try again, both directions

M809 Series- Front axle work and what to expect

When getting the bolts from the bumper free, we had two people, hardened power sockets and connectors, and a 6 foot and thick steel tube on it, one person making sure the wrench stayed in place and hammering on it, while the other was hanging on the tube. Still was a problem, and caused some...

M809 Series- Front axle work and what to expect

I saw Kenny busy with it at the 2014 GA Rally. After having to wait for a second person and then using 4 foot pipes as extra, and breaking tools, still without getting bolts free, I decided I needed one. But ... too expensive here: $ 870. Then I went to a tool day from one shop and the had...

M809 Series- Front axle work and what to expect

Thanks to advice of Kenny, I now have a brutal 1500 NM Milwaukee Power M18 Fuel cordless impact wrench, and thanks to Mike and Swamp Donkey, I also have the full set of power sockets including both wheel nut sockets: 6-edge and square. Man, its just pure fun to remove bolts and nuts just for...

If I see those threads I have to go lay down with a serious depression of working here alone, far away from help and cheap parts and ... and .. :shrugs: and then I seriously have to kick myself and :grd:

Going through my old threads, found these references to the same job. Just to help others looking at this, two earlier threads on this for the deuce and the five ton. The write-ups are great. Deuce front axle 5-ton rear axle

M809 Series- Front axle work and what to expect

I checked the .. 20P for the M39 and the 809 series. The 809 TM is better and more detailed than the M39 one, no problem finding the stuff you mentioned there.

How much grease would you need for the bearings and replacing the axle boot?
