I should have posted a couple weeks ago when I figured out the problem but wanted to really put it to use before deciding to keep it. I never posted any reviews about the winch on HF's website. I wanted to make sure it wasn't something I was doing wrong before making any final conclusions. I...

A little update on my Harbor Freight 12000lb winch. I had the replacement installed for a few weeks before I actually got to put it to real use. My father in law called me and said he had his tractor stuck in a creek and needed my help. I quickly drove over and hooked up the winch and started...

Update: I've gone through 2 of the Harbor Freight 12000lb winches. I'm not abusing them at all. I didn't even come close to their rate of pull. After install I tested them by just pulling about 30ft of line out and back in. Worked fine without a load. With a load both winches quit within less...

Do you have a M1009? I'm not sure but I bet the frames are different widths. I doubt my skid plate would bolt up to a 09. Let me know what you have and we'll go from there.

Good to hear the winch works well! I'm pretty sure that is not hijacking. Same subject with a different approach. I like it!

The only brackets I made were the 2"x2" angle iron pieces that dropped the fairlead down a bit. The skid plate was the only thing that I really fabbed up.

I also replaced all the carriage bolts that hold the bumper and grill guard on with grade 8 1/2-13 bolts. This really stiffened everything up nicely. Plus it makes it easier to take your bumper on and off since you can hold a backup and turn the bolts from the front side.

I got a chance to finish up my winch this weekend. I wasn't able to attach the fairlead to the bumper like I had planned. With the winch mounted upside down the cable comes out the bottom of the winch spool. If I would have mounted the fairlead to the bumper the cable would have had to come up...

I'm not sure if it can be wired 24 volt without mods. I'm thinking 12 volts will take care of anything I'm willing to hook onto.

The factory wires were now too short to reach the control box so I bought 3 battery cables to replace them. Battery cables work great because they are the same gage as the factory wires and they come with Ring termimals already attatched to both ends.

I then mounted my winch upside down with the engage/disengage handle on the driver's side. I monted it this way because I wanted to mount the control box for the winch where the slave cable hookup is. This would help keep the power cables to a minimum length. Next I removed the slave cable...

I bought the Badlands Universal Winch mounting plate when I bought my winch. After taking my bumper off and grill out I found two existing holes in the frame where the bumper bracket bolts up that I could use. That only left me with 2 holes to drill through the frame. Luckily 2 holes in the...

    Diy Winch Install

There's been a few times in my M1028 adventures where having a winch would have made life much easier. I always say it's better to have and not need than to need and not have. There's tons of options when buying a winch and it can be overwhelming choosing one. I've heard a good way to choose the...
