My M35A2 Project aka Big Betty

The End. Earlier today I accepted a certified check in exchange for Big Betty, and then watched her roll up the street and out of sight. My son, now 17 and a senior in high school, was just 10 when we got into MV’s and bought Betty. He learned how to drive her by 11. That experience...

My M35A2 Project aka Big Betty

Thank you, sir. It has been an adventure. You will not find a more supportive and helpful group of people anywhere, than SteelSoldiers members. These old trucks will make you sweat, bleed, cuss, and occasionally fling a valuable tool far into the woods (maybe that's just me), but hope you...

My M35A2 Project aka Big Betty

Getting the fuel injectors tested and set is proving to be more difficult than expected. But, that's being covered in a different post. I did make progress on cleaning, painting, and other chores related to putting it back together. I media blasted and acid washed the hardware and valve...

My M35A2 Project aka Big Betty

Betty got a little exercise pulling stumps over at a friend's house. They turned out to be easy pulls, but it was fun just the same. https://vimeo.com/154676336 The next morning, my son and I pulled the valve covers and set the clearance on all valves. None were terribly off, but I found a...

The reflectors were $6 each, with 383 green metal frames.

Well, we put the tailgate back on and finished tweaking the camo pattern. I ordered all new DOT reflectors that should be here in a day or two. The reflective tape is just mocked up for now, but I think I'm going to put it on after the paint cures for a couple of days. I like it.

My M35A2 Project aka Big Betty

The days and days of rainy wet weather really slowed down the paint work. It's clear and dry again, so we're making a bit of progress now. I may be committing some kind of sin, but I'm not painting the "proper" 3-color camo pattern. Instead, I'm matching up the patten to the cargo cover. If I...

Got the tailgate primed and base coat of 383 Green done. The hardware is soaking in a bucket of phosphoric acid. Maybe get it finished up later this week.

My M35A2 Project aka Big Betty

Yeah, the thread did die off for a while. New job, new house, and life in general had me tied up for much of the last year. I just didn't have the energy for doing much with the truck. Maybe we're getting settled back into a routine where I have time and energy to "soldier on" with things here...

My M35A2 Project aka Big Betty

It's that time of year again. It's not 95+ degrees and I feel like working on the truck. I actually put her on the market for sale for a bit, but no takers at my price, so Betty is taking us to the rally again. I'm stripping the old paint and reflective tape from the tailgate today. I'll get...

My M35A2 Project aka Big Betty

I finished up the front axle re-paint today. It's not perfect but it'll do for now and it's better than it was. Truck is loaded and ready for SSGR14!

My M35A2 Project aka Big Betty

I got home today about 1500 after working around the clock from yesterday, and it was too early to go to bed. I'd be up again in the middle of the night if I did that. So, I started stripping the old paint off of the front axle. I figure I can finish cleaning it up and then repaint it on...

My M35A2 Project aka Big Betty

I finally got brave enough to try a bit of stenciling. I have the stencil kit for the deuce, so I plan to redo all of the usual stenciled markings on the truck. I thought I would start with putting my forum ID on the bumper.

My M35A2 Project aka Big Betty

I got tired of the cab and cargo tops sagging and holding puddles of rain water, mixed with leaves and bird poop, and whatever else that goo consist of, so I fixed it. I don't know why I didn't do this a couple of years ago. I just used some 5/4 planks and secured them with lacing twine.

I'm working 16-18 hours a day and worn out, but I just had to take a few minutes and put the spin-on kit on. It looks great. Instant oil pressure is nice.

The spin-on oil filter kit arrived today. I can hardly wait to get out there to install them. I'll have a couple of brand new canister filters available if anyone needs them.

My M35A2 Project aka Big Betty

I bought a set of these "Internal Pipe Wrenches" for about $12 at Home Depot. The one for 3/4" pipe worked just fine to extract the broken piece of tubing from the oil filter boss. Of course, I discovered that it was not in there very tight like I thought it was. I was expecting that to be a...

My M35A2 Project aka Big Betty

Thanks, Ron. I'm ordering a Inside Pipe Wrench set. And, I'm taking the opportunity to upgrade to a spin-on filter kit. I'm hoping the pipe extractor will back the piece out.
