I just left the fuel pump on for about 5 minutes before turning the ignition and she fired up without skipping a beat. I know there wasn't a drop of fuel in the fuel lines around the injectors. I guess bleeding isn't really needed on these rigs.
Well, that concludes my project. My RPM gauge...
I cleaned my block up and noticed the back two pistons have some damage. They have indents on the edge facing each other. Also, the metal ring around the piston hole is slightly bumped up.
Is this indicative of an issue? What can be done?
I definitely dont think it was the seller. USPS for sure. We've all seen the occasional package mangled from any carrier. I just meant that circumstances would have been different and the package would have likely not been handled by the same people or at the same time.
I contacted the seller to send them back. That means I'm out a week or two waiting on the new gaskets though... what a shame. Hopefully I will remember how to put all this back together then.
Should have bought them from Gimpy :P
Welp, the issue was in the rear head. Got the rear head off and there were obvious leaks from each of the pistons to the antifreeze. The 3 bolts under the injectors were not torqued. I was able to unscrew one of them with just my hand. So there is the cause.
Machine shop checked both heads...
Well, here is my fabrication.
It worked great. Just cut a socket in half with an angle grinder and then welded it to a flat piece of metal, than ground down the end that has the socket.
Pulled off my front head and it looked great. Gasket looked practically new. Both the block and head were...
I looked at the offset Oxygen Sensor wrenches. They look like they would work just fine and they are cheap as well. Under $10 most places online.
I am either going to buy one of those or make the device below I found on SS. Just cut a 7/8 socket in half and weld onto a piece of metal. Doesn't...
I've been toying with the idea of redoing the back head as well but my mechanic keeps saying "If its not broke, don't fix it." It seems crazy to have it this torn down and to just leave it alone.
Plus I know these heads can only be shaved down so much and the back head was just redone a few...
If I am only getting one of my two heads shaved, should I get the valve job on that one head or leave it alone?
I imagine only getting a valve job on one head could be an issue. I wasn't planning on taking the second head off since the gasket was just redone on that one a few months ago.
Alright, someone just told me I can leave the valves and springs in. The head will come off with those still attached and the machine shop will remove them and do the valve job... that makes this much simpler. :) Thank you for that clarification!
After watching some youtube videos of the spring compression tools, it doesn't look so bad. I'll pick up a tool and keep on working.
So for the valves, I need to remove the springs, clips, and pull those rods out. Sound about right?
Than I just need to remove the fuel lines, exhaust, and...
I am literally some guy who bought a socket set at Home Depot and have never done anything really mechanical. So I do not have any special tools.
I see some valve spring compressor tools on Amazon for $50 or so. I am guessing the $14 8 inch compressor tool wont do?
I'll do a little more...
Well the rear head was just de-done. He did use a new style gasket and get the head shaved. The front head was not touched so I am hoping that is the blown one this time. I have got the valve cover of and push rods out.
How do the rods(cylinders?) with the springs come off? I dont see any...
Thanks for the information guys.
My oil is already a milky white so it has to be changed. Do I need to flush the system somehow or just change the oil as usual?
Im gonna do the change myself. I don't want to pay the shop for 3 days of work... :)
I just hope I don't make things worse. The...
How many hours should a shop charge me to swap a head gasket?
Now into the story. I bought this LDT engine and the previous owner told me he had just put in a new head gasket. Got the new engine in and sure enough, it still had a blown head gasket on the rear head. Had a friend who swapped the...
