If you haven't pulled the drive flanges on the hubs, it will continue to spin the pinion. Pull those off (8 bolts each, 3/4 socket) and it will let the pinion gear stop moving, the same as if you had lock out hubs set on free. It will let dirt into the wheel bearings, but they are greased not...
