It took me awhile to figure out the trick to the boot clamps. Most of the time, the boot won't stay on the groove on it's own. And it seems like you'd need 4 or 5 hands to hold it on all the way around so you can put the clamp on.

Nothing is available premade, GI or civvy that will fit. I looked. Only idea I've come up is a a way to mount some ammo cans above the tank and make them removable (i.e. some kind of mounting system like sliders or such).

I don't think I'd be terribly concerned about that. I know when I drove your truck to my parent's house (30 miles, mostly interstate) I checked them and I wasn't concerned.
