    Question for off-road experts

Thanks for taking the detour Duncan, better hang on to what we have left of the m656/xm757 trucks in this country, since they appear to melt away quickly over there. Tom, the 5th wheel and dromedary platform on the 757 weigh about as much as the aluminum bed on the 656 cargo version. The...

    Question for off-road experts

Duncan it's not my photo/caption, just one from my files collected over the last several years....it shows one of the m656 8x8 trucks retired from the service in Europe and possibly available to someone like yourself interested in restoring it. Less than 500 were ever made and 90% of them...

    Question for off-road experts

Maybefixit, the cargo version runs without the shocks, so there won't be a problem removing them in this case. Duncan, how far is this place from you (see caption for image below)? About making a video, yes, eventually, but this is a hobby and fortunately no dead lines.....

    Question for off-road experts

There are a few around, prepare to pay extra because of the extensive use of aluminum and since they are rare, parts are hard to come by....I'd love to see more of them saved, one reason for posting images of my 757, actually. This one in Northern FL (image by Jim Henderson). Oh, BTW, these...

    Question for off-road experts

It's better without the shocks, so that's the way it'll be. Thanks for all helpful hints! Learned something new and that's always fun. :-)

    Question for off-road experts

Hauling a ballistic missile (mostly on-road) could have something to do with it. :-) Anyway, it's raining now so I'll drive it again later.

    Question for off-road experts

The spec: "The suspension allows for 4.3 inches of vertical jaunce and 8.8 inches of vertical rebound. Under roll conditions, the wheel can go into 9 inches of jaunce and 8.8 inches of rebound. It can cross a 27 inch vertical step without interferences." The shocks have a 10 inch stroke and a...

    Question for off-road experts

Thanks for the input! At what speed do shocks stop serving a purpose, maybe the bump stops are all that's needed at slow speeds off road?

    Question for off-road experts

Starting to move the 757 around and looking at suspension components I noticed the limiting effect of the shocks, how wrong is it to have an axle suspended by a shock absorber as shown in the image below? I'm going to run the same test tomorrow without the shocks to see if there is a big...
