Won an M1083A1 - 1900 mile recovery trip soon! (ND to CA)

Hi Greg, thanks! We might have the opportunity to connect in the future. We occasionally head over to your area for some amateur rocket launches - looking for some outings to take our truck on! Best Regards, Dan

Karl, thanks again for all your support, mentoring, and friendship! Could not have made this journey without you! And, all the many others here in this forum! We met so many great people through this, both in person and virtually, and look forward to contributing back to this community as we...

Won an M1083A1 - 1900 mile recovery trip soon! (ND to CA)

Thanks! It does have that new truck smell (or is it old truck smell?) - and we LOVE IT! Karl has an awesome shop there - was a great help to us!!! We will be doing an expedition build thread (or two), plus others in the FMTV forum to share what we're learning about this truck. M1081 - when I'm...

Won an M1083A1 - 1900 mile recovery trip soon! (ND to CA)

[Part 4 of 4. Really.] We took a little time to do some sightseeing in Salt Lake City (hadn't tried Uber before - worked out great). Once the part was in, the service tech was back out and promptly got us up and running. We continued on through southern Utah, a short piece of Arizona, and into...

Won an M1083A1 - 1900 mile recovery trip soon! (ND to CA)

[Part 3b of 4] Then we hit rush hour stop and go traffic on I-15 in downtown Salt Lake City. Mary Alice was driving, and we noticed the left digit on the Allison console was dark, then noticed that we were stuck in 4th gear. She was able to safely get off the freeway (again, with all of us...

Won an M1083A1 - 1900 mile recovery trip soon! (ND to CA)

[Part 3a of 4] With the sound advice from several members here to NOT shut down for anything until we were safely home, we modified our driving plans a bit. We came up with a schedule to switch drivers every hour or so, extending our driving time into the night for a few hours, and taking short...

Won an M1083A1 - 1900 mile recovery trip soon! (ND to CA)

[Part 3 of 4] We got on the road departing Fargo on time. At our first fuel and lunch stop in Jamestown, ND, we shut down (BIG mistake...), and couldn't restart. Same as previous symtoms - we had 12v lighting, but master power swicth would not bring up the dash, and starter switch had no effect...

Won an M1083A1 - 1900 mile recovery trip soon! (ND to CA)

[Part 2 of 4] We made it to Karl's shop in Fargo, and immediately got to work. Together we assessed the existing tires as roadworthy, and now had plenty of "spare" spares" for a worst-case scenario. We assembled two of the tires on wheels, and loaded them all into the back of the truck. In order...

Won an M1083A1 - 1900 mile recovery trip soon! (ND to CA)

[Part 1 of 4] Here's a recap and lessons learned from our recovery trip; hope this will be helpful to others in future recovery trips. For any troubleshooting items that carry over and aren't related to the trip itself, I'll start new threads in the FMTV forum. Planning: Lots of good...

Won an M1083A1 - 1900 mile recovery trip soon! (ND to CA)

Thanks, Bob, I'm a blessed husband and father. Great team, it's been really good for us. Just stopped for the night in North Las Vegas, passing on the strip this time. Truck will stay idling during a short night as we take turns in it and a hotel room. Final stretch tomorrow through heaviest...

Won an M1083A1 - 1900 mile recovery trip soon! (ND to CA)

Allison tech found that the output speed sensor (OSS) was shot. From the error codes we were researching, plus the non-functioning speedometer, that seems to make sense. Part is on order, earliest arrival in 48 hours. He was not able to get communications with the transmission control module...

Thanks for all the assistance tonight. One more post - some pictures of the good times when we were rolling through Montana and Utah. My wife was having a blast driving it - really enjoyed it. Second photo is the amber LED warning lights for night driving. Last shot is at a lunch stop...

Won an M1083A1 - 1900 mile recovery trip soon! (ND to CA)

The P0721 (most recent error code) is interesting. Found several references saying that it's related to shaft speed sensor signal. Starting with the sensor module itself, other downstream problems could be wiring issues, etc. before it gets to the TCM. Sounds like this kind of error could be a...

NDT, that could explain current behavior, googling codes now. Will also look for Allison support here in SLC if we need to go that route. Sent from my 0PJA2 using Tapatalk
