I would tend to agree that running a motor without the cooling system installed is a gamble. If his motive is to just fire the engine up and shut it down in 15 seconds to make sure the motor will lite up then I think he will be fine.

I agree, take the heads to a machine shop would be my first order of business. I know Dive Dive knows his business, so I'm not one to second guess him, just saying.
I have been through 4 radiators in 22 years on my M1008 The best one so far has been the aluminum with the plastic tanks. All the other ones were the 4 row copper and metal tanks. The aluminum through AutoZone came with a lifetime guarantee.
I would have paid money to watch a video of you running that thing at top speed. That would have been more fun than doing it myself, I think. You are doing a great job. You must really be enjoying restoring a piece of Military history back to pristine condition.

I'm not sure you can use the gauge as an accurate assessment of the tank level. When a tank is completely full, at least on my gauge, the marker gauge measures well past the last full point mark on the gauge.
