Oil seal mod. for 3053 input shaft

The good thing is that our input shaft doesn't have to be touched, where the seal lip gets to ride on. The bad is that the stock retainer simply doesn't admit any such mods, to make room for an adequately sized seal (typically 2.0"×1.5"×0.25").

Oil seal mod. for 3053 input shaft

Did I say that...?:? No, I was referring to later, more recent transmissions, in general (like this one described here, for example...) Our good-old Spicers (#3052/3053) have never seen any changes, in all these years.

Oil seal mod. for 3053 input shaft

Tom, I used to think exactly the same way... And I fully agree with you that if it leaks while the input shaft is spinning, then something isn't right. But... I have seen this even with all-new transmissions, running on the bench: every time after a stop - a few hours later I had oil that came...

Oil seal mod. for 3053 input shaft

With all respect: that's the problem; your "model" is just wrong: it shows 87.5mm where in reality we have 88.9mm (3.50"). So instead of 2.5mm material left it really is only 1.1mm (in the best case). It's just common sense; if you actually measured that part you will come to that same...

Oil seal mod. for 3053 input shaft

We have not mentioned yet the option of having this retainer made out of cast iron, same as original but with the correct shape to accommodate that seal. Anyone here having connections to a good foundry? Or even owning one?? I still think that a batch of say 100 pieces could be sold easily if...

Oil seal mod. for 3053 input shaft

Nice drawing and study! Hopefully it would end with a reliable (and much more affordable solution) but I’m afraid that you are being a bit too optimistic here…? Your modified bearing retainer(-model) may be acceptable as it looks but the reality is a little different. Even for a seal a bit...

Oil seal mod. for 3053 input shaft

True, but it all depends on how much material needs to be removed- and where... I'm always open to new (and less expensive) ideas, to solve this old problem. Ideally, we would end with a still reliable solution, for say $100 - or less. G.

Oil seal mod. for 3053 input shaft

Agreed, but... they are saying it is holding up fine, and for years now? I have heard only good comments from Mr. Talbert (M-Series Rebuild) and I simply can't imagine that he would put at risk his good reputation by installing something that wasn't well tested before? Garrett, there might be a...

Oil seal mod. for 3053 input shaft

Very interesting, since there isn't really much room left! Must be a slim, tiny seal then...? G.

Oil seal mod. for 3053 input shaft

No problem, Sir! And I really thought about you when I said "guinea pig"... because I know too well how many miles you drive! Just let me update that drawing, so it has all the measurements- and in inches if you prefer? G.

Oil seal mod. for 3053 input shaft

I had already posted some about this modification in another thread but then decided to better start a new one... Above are some of the posts about this same subject, moved over from that other thread. Fact is, the old design, 7/8 inch-long, RH-threaded/grooved section inside our front bearing...
