Deuce tail roller and bed winch, skid loading setup

I'll try to get a loading/unloading video. The shelter is currently sitting in the deuce, I need to unload it in the near future anyway. So far I've used the bed winch for all kinds of stuff. When needing to winch something, It's a lot easier to use the hyd winch in the bed than it is to use...

Deuce tail roller and bed winch, skid loading setup

I thought about some guides. Most winch trucks setup for oilfield work have just a big steel rod sticking up on each side of the tail roller for guides. The problem with this or the guides in your pic is that the sides of the shelter could be damaged as they aren't very heavy.I think I'll be ok...

Deuce tail roller and bed winch, skid loading setup

Pulled it up fine but you can tell everything is in a pretty good strain getting the front started over the roller. I'm glad I added the center support rollers, I think they are needed for even this relatively light shelter. I tried to pull it up in high range on the winch but that was a no-go...

Deuce tail roller and bed winch, skid loading setup

Well I winched the shelter onto the truck today. I haven't took a vid of it yet though. One of the reasons I didn't take a vid is everything didn't go as smooth as I had hoped. I found out quickly that with the tight clearances between the shelter and the bed sides, you have to make sure you...

Deuce tail roller and bed winch, skid loading setup

It looks more complicated than it really is. I just kind of had it all in my head.

Deuce tail roller and bed winch, skid loading setup

Well I finally got everything plumbed up and working. I haven't tried to load the shelter yet but I did hook it to the bumper of my cj5 and lifted the front of it off the ground. I also put the winch in high range, hooked the line to the bumperett, stalled the winch, and set the relief to the...

Deuce tail roller and bed winch, skid loading setup

Well technically speaking, the winch isn't designed for lifting. Winches for lifting (better known as hoist) cost a fortune compared to regular winches. The fact is though, hyd winches have fairly good holding properties. When you stop the hyd winch, fluid can't go in or out of the motor so...

Deuce tail roller and bed winch, skid loading setup

Yes, a cutoff wheel on a angle grinder. It's not as clean as the pic would lead you to believe, that's why I mentioned I needed to clean it up. I'll probably frame it out with some small angle. I've gotten to the point now that I just want to see it work and I'll go back and fix the cosmetics...

Deuce tail roller and bed winch, skid loading setup

Got the winch mounted today. Now all I need to do is plumb and wire it up. Does anybody happen to know the fitting size off the top of their head of the lines on the winch? I still need to dress up the hole I cut into the headboard and some other cosmetic issues but everything is mounted.

Deuce tail roller and bed winch, skid loading setup

My original plan was to mount the winch under the bed but even though it had many advantages, after thinking long and hard about it I realized that the disadvantages outweighed the advantages. The main reason I wanted to mount it under the bed is so the winch wouldn't be sticking sticking out...

Deuce tail roller and bed winch, skid loading setup

I'll get some pics. I cut out a piece of 1/2" plate the same size as the winch footprint that the winch will sit on. The winch will be sitting into the headboard 3" which is about as far as I felt comfortable with to maintain enough clearance between the winch and cab. The winch is roughly 8"...

Deuce tail roller and bed winch, skid loading setup

The best thing to do is go get some tools and jump in. I'm constantly doing a fab job of some sort. This is one of the rare times I've stopped long enough to take pics. Yesterday I got the hole for the winch cut in the headboard and the plate the winch will attach to tacked into place.

Deuce tail roller and bed winch, skid loading setup

I've been needing to do a set for probably a year. I just stay out of deep water the best I can and roll on. My original plan was to have this project rapped up and the shelter finished to go camping on Memorial Day but that fell apart pretty quick. Now it looks like the 4th is out of the...

Deuce tail roller and bed winch, skid loading setup

Well with work and other things getting in the way, this has been a slow project. Got the center support rollers finished. I finally pretty much have the tail roller finished. I just have to clean up the rough edges and throw on some paint. Now on the the winch.

Deuce tail roller and bed winch, skid loading setup

No, I just haven't cut the ends off yet. I didn't know for sure where everything was going to fit so I made them long, figuring I'd cut them off when got it mounted. I'll cut them off and drill a cross hole for a pin to secure everything in place. Everything will come off except the brackets...

Deuce tail roller and bed winch, skid loading setup

Well after a Memorial Day cookout with the family, I finally got a little time this afternoon to work on the truck. I got the tail roller mounted and fabbed up the brackets that will hold the center support rollers. The center support brackets will be held at the top with a pin through the...

Deuce tail roller and bed winch, skid loading setup

The skid has two shackles attached at each corner. I was planning on just getting some chain spreaders with two legs and attach them to the corner shackles. I know what you are talking about with the chokers, I've seen them on trucks before. I think that's really overkill for this little...

Deuce tail roller and bed winch, skid loading setup

Based on Kenny's pics of the pipeline deuce, it appears that my 5/16" clearance will be ok. I was just a little concerned that the roller would flex enough that the winch line would contact the bed. I may go ahead and raise mine just a little as it's only tacked on right now and it would be a...

Deuce tail roller and bed winch, skid loading setup

When picking the shelter off the ground the winch line will be pulling dead in the center of the roller. The load won't get transferred to the outer edges until the shelter skids start over the roller.

Deuce tail roller and bed winch, skid loading setup

Worked on the roller a little today. I tack welded the brackets to the bed and test fit the roller. Does anybody know how much the roller needs to stick up higher than the bed floor? I had planned on 1/2" but on the test fit I ended up with 5/16" for some reason. I wonder if that's enough? I...
