Working On The M561 Gama Goat

Good job, I suspect you are correct on the o ring. Since my pistons were seized in the sleeve I did not have to be as gentle. Thanks Keith for helping Mark, much appreciated.

What size do you need?, I think I have some 1/4 nuts and ferrules left over from my brake work.

Alpine green for the original Detroit color, it looks to me like the substitute carc green 383 matches the rebuild color.

Working On The M561 Gama Goat

Great news Mark, I actually have a copy of the MWO that changes the wiring harness as you describe. Again, great news.

That should make an oil change much easier, looks good.

Working On The M561 Gama Goat

Great news and progress, look forward to seeing the stand as I need to make one myself. A company on the big "E" has the oil drain valves, I made an offer and got it shipped for $20, thanks for posting that part number.

Working On The M561 Gama Goat

Mark, according to the part number this place has them for sale. Of course all I can go by is the part number in the TM. Update: I just ordered one using this part number, when it arrives I will post up a picture and we will see if it's the correct one, it was $10 shipped...

Working On The M561 Gama Goat

I plan on using a tractor to lift mine out, must be some one near by with a tractor or excavator that can do the job.

Working On The M561 Gama Goat

I agree, I have seen several videos of those engines running quite easily on a makeshift stand.

Good job on tracking that engine down, good time of year for a road trip, keep us updated.

Working On The M561 Gama Goat

I checked with white Owl today, the used engine may be an option for me, he said they test run them. Of course shipping is always an issue for me in the great North of Maine.

Working On The M561 Gama Goat

Interesting, the Gama Goat engine TM 9-2815-214-34 March 1970, GM Model 3-53 For Engine Diesel states " The block is bored to receive replaceable wet-type cylinder liners. A water jacket surrounds the upper half of each cylinder liner. The water jacket and air box are sealed off by a seal ring...

Also, if you decide to pull the head I bought the injector timing gage, both you and Tom are welcome to borrow it.

Working On The M561 Gama Goat

I'm afraid it may be the large O-rings that are around the cylinder sleeves and you would do all that work on the head and have it not work. Although you may pull the head and it may be obvious what's bad, it's hard to say. I was tempted to pull the head on mine but that thing looks real heavy...

Working On The M561 Gama Goat

Looks like it chafed and shorted, brown is your running lights. Replaced many of those wiring harnesses. Glad you found the problem.

Working On The M561 Gama Goat

My boss on the engine had a two line number, first line is 5033-6299, second line reads 3D-68963. Also found this, part number is the same the TM calls for, a bit pricey though. http://store.reliableindustries.com/engine-parts/3038144-thermostat-assy-3-53-170-deg-opening-temp/

Working On The M561 Gama Goat

I am new to this engine so I can't be of much help with this problem. I did purchase a injector timing gage from a outfit who claims to be the authority on these engines. Give Stephen a call @ 504.362.2371 and see what he says, probably a good source for the thermostat as well. It looks like...
