    M1009 charging issues

Now I'm curious what was wrong with that bulb... :) Very happy you got it fixed [thumbzup]

    M1009 charging issues

As long as the bulb draws at least 1/2Watt, the exciter circuit should function.

    M1009 charging issues

Yeah, sometimes those links fail looking fine - bad fusible links can conduct for a continuity test but fail to carry an actual load. I've gotten in the habit of doing fusible link tests with a halogen light-bulb fixture - which is made from an old cigar lighter spotlight with a 130Watt H3...

    M1009 charging issues

If the key is on, the engine is not spinning, and the circuits are good - the light should be on. Once the engine is up out of low idle right after a start, the alternator should be charging and the light should go out, and you should see 14.4V from the alternator ground to the alternator...

    M1009 charging issues

That's the current hopefully going through the idiot light while the field coil is not being driven - the light should be on in that condition.

One more check you can do is to short the brown wire to the alternator's ground and see if the idiot light turns on when the key is on. If they don't, then your circuit is bad somewhere and you need to check again. If the fuses/links are good, the bulbs and connections are good and the...

    M1009 charging issues

Work your way back from the socket - that bulb is powered by the 24V relay. Check the connection to the PCB from the harness and double check that wire is good from the relay.

    M1009 charging issues

If you pull the cluster you are going to need to measure the terminals for the gen 2 idiot light. When the ignition is switched on one of the two terminals should be reading ~24V to chassis ground. If not, your 24 fuse is bad. It's important to note that the idiot light circuit is part of the...

    M1009 charging issues

Next step then is to check your fusible links and the other idiot light. Are the idiot lights turning on solid when you turn the key before you start the truck?

    M1009 charging issues

Sounds like your voltage regulator is going on gen2 at least - the idiot lights are attached to to field coil (what makes the alternator generate power), if the light is turning on that means the field coil is not being powered. Can you clarify this from your first post? That part about 24 on...

    M1009 charging issues

Double check your numbers on the Gen1 running voltage, I presume an error there. For the Gen2 voltages, measure from the alternator's ground lug to the terminals, not the chassis ground and it'll give you what would appear to be normal 12V voltages on your readings - it's best to think of the...
