LDS VS LDT and the real differences

Well if someone has a sacrificial lamb they could easily build a test mule. Just add a better/bigger turbo along with a waste gate and manual boost controller. I'd be curious if we could even make it to 30 psi of boost without something giving. If I remember correctly, those who put boost...

LDS VS LDT and the real differences

I have always wondered how much boost the ldt could handle. It's already in the 22:1 Ish range. More boost = more compression. With supposedly weak rods and failure prone head gaskets it would be interesting to see. Which would lead to the next question. Are the head gaskets a poor...

LDS VS LDT and the real differences

There are people that run egt's closer to 1300 and don't have a problem. Not saying it's a good idea. But it is possible. But as Chris said these pistons aren't pure aluminum. They can handle higher than 1200. Not that it's the best idea.

Except these pistons are an alloy. Aluminum also melts at 1220°F.

The belt less accessory drive was pretty cool on that engine.

It always worries me when an ip is taken apart. As in there is no reason to disassemble one unless something is wrong.

Yup. That's pretty much what mine looks like. I forgot to get a picture.

LDS VS LDT and the real differences

I'll take a picture this weekend. So far mines the only data plate like it I have seen.

LDS VS LDT and the real differences

That would be the most sensible way. Is that how it's done? No idea. A big part of mix and match parts may be because of suppliers going out of business. Such as continental. If you have a Continental block rebuilt in the late 80's or 90's then chances are you have hercules/white parts in...

LDS VS LDT and the real differences

Even if you have a tag saying continental or whatever make, there's no doubt that a head from a hercules or something could be on it. Or vise versa. Heck you could have lds parts in an ldt.

LDS VS LDT and the real differences

No Greg, I literally mean I don't know who made my engine. My data plate just says multifuel. Mine was rebuilt in 91. I guess they pulled the data plate and swapped it for a generic plate. The rebuild plate underneath it has the rod and main bearings listed that they used and a few other bits...

Mines a mystery engine. If it ever craps out I don't know which manufacturer to blame.

LDS VS LDT and the real differences

White owned hercules through the 80's. It would seem from what I can gather that continental was first to make the multifuel. Then hercules, and then white/hercules. It wouldn't be unreasonable to speculate that white started using the same crank for both the tractor and truck engines...

LDS VS LDT and the real differences

The lds has more power than the ldt. There are more differences between the 2 engines than just the pump. You can tune an ldt to near lds power levels. It's not hard to do. Basically, if you have a deuce with a good running ldt there would be no point in spending the money on an lds. Just...

LDS VS LDT and the real differences

I don't think the multifuel is a bad engine. I have no plans on swapping mine out. It's just when people start throwing out numbers like 5k to gain 50 to 100 hp with no guarantees I just don't see the point or value. You can find a good running truck with a 6bt cummins or dt 466 for around...

LDS VS LDT and the real differences

The fact that old good running international trucks are laying around CHEAP I see no benefit to spending a fortune on an increasingly obsolete engine. A dt 466 has more power and torque from the start. It's also easy to build up to monstrous power. All while having parts easily obtainable...

That and a lot of pullers don't like to give out their secrets.

LDS VS LDT and the real differences

There's no doubt the lds in bone stock form is more potent than the ldt. But to say the lds isn't the same basic motor is ridiculous. Is a sbc suddenly a different motor if you install a different cam and carburetor? If you have access to a cheap lds and need to swap motors anyway then by...
