I just got my generator running today a 10KW unit with three hours showing on the clock. The unit was drained of all fluids and prepped for storage after fueling and priming doing all the checks it fired up had one injector sticking for a bit but as it ran it cleared out and runs like new. My question is how to get the unit to properly charge the batteries the gauge sits square in the center of the yellow when running I put brand new batteries in it when I was prepping it for its test run. I went through the TMs on jtonkas site but never found reference to this problem maybe one of the generator experts will chime in here or be able to refer me to the TM that covers this I didnt think it could be as easy as adjusting the generator on a deuce or five ton.

How long did you run it for? The charging system is not very high output. It takes a while for them to charge the batteries. The meter does not instantly jump up when running, like a CUCV does.

Did you simply measure the battery voltage while running, then shut it off and compare? As long as it is higher when running, I would say it is charging properly.

Doghead is correct. the charging system on the MEP-003a is only a 6.5 amp charging output. It can take quite a while to charge up the batteries at 6.5 amps.

You'll need a multimeter to measure the DC voltage to tell if your charging system is working properly or not. Start off like DH said and measure the DC voltage with the set off, and again with it running. The voltages should be about 24 and 26 to 28 volts respectively.

Next read this post...charging system test. The whole thread is a good read, but the main information you'll need it in the link above.

The whole thread can be read here...mep002 FVR 4006 Regulator Source?

OK...Next lesson....DO NOT LET THE ENGINE IDLE. Start it and get it right up to 1800 RPM's. It's best to leave it at 1800 RPM's and just shut it down, so it goes right up to speed the next time you start it.
